How Training & Development is Important and Useful
How is it effective in an organization? I think this is the query.
To start with, we have to understand that training is different from teaching. That is, it is not just imparting information. It is empowering the trainee to do the job for which the training is done.
Broadly speaking, training has three objectives: (1) imparting the relevant information to enable the trainee to do the job more effectively; (2) developing the necessary skills in the trainee; and (3) cultivating the correct attitude towards the job.
There are different types of training.
When a new employee is joining, they have to undergo induction training, in which we will have to provide basic knowledge and skills. In certain cases, it can be conducted in a classroom setting. Otherwise, it must be organized as on-the-job training. In many cases, it can be a combination of both.
After the initial training, it may be necessary to conduct refresher programs.
Another method is conducting workshops where specific skills can be developed or capabilities improved.
Yet another type of training needed is to impart new techniques or create awareness of new aspects like safety methods.
For all these, training needs to be identified, and post-training evaluation must also be done.
Thus, training enables the trainee to do the job, improve their capabilities, create confidence to perform better, and help develop professional attitudes. This naturally improves the productivity and morale of the organization.
However, one thing must be kept in mind. It is not a one-time activity. For the desired results, continuous training and assessments are necessary.
