A newly joined trainee engineer asks his boss, "What is the meaning of appraisal?"

Boss: "Do you know the meaning of resignation?"

Trainee: "Yes, I do."

Boss: "So let me make you understand what an appraisal is by comparing it with resignation."

Comparison study: Appraisal and Resignation

Appraisal Resignation

In an appraisal meeting, they will speak only about your weaknesses, errors, and failures. In a resignation meeting, they will speak only about your strengths, past achievements, and success.

In an appraisal, you may need to cry and beg for even a 10% hike. In a resignation, you can easily demand (or get even without asking) more than a 50-60% hike.

During an appraisal, they will deny a promotion, saying you didn't meet the expectations, lack leadership qualities, and had several drawbacks in our objectives/goals. During a resignation, they will say you are a core member of the team; you are the vision of the company - how can you go? You have to take the project on your shoulders and lead your juniors to success.

There is a 90% chance of not getting any significant incentives after an appraisal. There is a 90% chance of getting an immediate hike after you submit your resignation.

Trainee: "Yes, boss, enough. Now I understand my future. For an appraisal, I will have to resign...!!!"

Dear Boss,

Every time you leave a company, it seems like it was the worst place to work. Then, when you join a new company, after some time, you start to think that the previous one was actually better than the current one.

The moral of your story is - more risk, more gain.

Yes, Keerthi. You are right. Whenever we are available, our company never feels our importance. And after we leave the organization, they will surely remember us (if we perform extraordinarily).

Thanks for your comments.
