Very well said.. I think when one is aspiring to take his boss place, the boss must be aspiring to take his bosses places and so and so forth.

No boss will like a junior moving into his shoes.
One has to go with the boss by easing his job by taking over his daily choirs with his consent and by keeping him posted about the events and seeking his guidance whenever required. Assuring the boss that you are his real assistant and not trying to undercut him.
