Developing the HR Department from Scratch
I'm Surya, and I have recently joined an automobile company as an HR executive. I want to develop the HR department to a corporate level. Here, we have a system for everything, but no one follows it; they have a very lenient attitude towards their work.
So, I want to develop it from level 0, and it includes:
1. Recruitment
2. Induction and training
3. Issuing appointment letters/releasing letters
4. Employee leave and attendance
5. Work atmosphere, etc.
But I'm very confused about where to start first. Hence, I request you to help me with this. I am awaiting your reply.
Thanks and Regards,
Ms. Surya

Please start by understanding the business and the culture as you have mentioned. Since you are new to this company, please make sure that you know the systems and their influencing factors very well. Understand what the company needs from HR and prioritize accordingly. In case the company is expanding, you may need to focus on hiring. If hiring is required only to backfill, you may look at other areas. Employee data management is another area you may consider as it would provide you with all the information about your employees and their placement within the organization. Ensure the existing data is stored correctly, including all the required documents. The appointment letters and other documents that you need to issue should follow the hiring and joining cycle. For training and recruitment, study what is happening and why things have not worked previously. Plan training as required by the business. Please make sure you understand the business well before initiating any program.
Employee engagement programs need to be designed as per the environment. There are many options, and you need to find the custom fit for your organization. Rewards and recognition can be planned and implemented. Certain day or theme-based events such as quarterly dinners, bi-annual town halls, and annual family/employee days can be considered.
