I have been working in the hospitality industry for 9 years and been working as secretary to General Manager since last six years. I would like to pursue my career in HR and for that, I have done PGDBA in HR also.
Wherever I apply for HR role they ask for the experience though I have taken training in HR and I do have basic knowledge of the functioning of the HR department.
Would request you to kindly help to advise how should I move forward.

Dear member,
If you are working as Executive Assistant to the GM for the last long years then overall you have grasped the dynamics of the hotel industry. However, what you do not know is how the HR works. Against this backdrop, you may convince your GM for the internal transfer to the HR Department. Before that, you may ask his permission to spend about 1-2 hours in the HR Department.
If you wish to pursue a career in HR then it makes sense to ask for the change of department in the same hotel. Other industries also ask for the "experience" as much hotel industry asks for. Other industries are also as much clannish as hotel industry is. I am giving this suggestion so as to overcome this entry point barrier.
By the way, just you have done a course in HR need not mean you should pursue a career in the HR Department. You can use management concepts in other departments also. You can join the banquet department also. From there you may move to banquet sales and from there hotel sales. I recommend this because compared with HR, banquet office or banquet sales offer better opportunities.
All the best!

Hi all this is amar bhavsar HR Executive Arfin India Limited.
Same thing happend with me also. I have completed PGDHRM and i applied for job as HR Executive in one of the hospital but they said that you don't have any experience in HR we can't hire you for HR profile. After they offered me guest relations officer position. at that time i need job also so I have accepted the Guest relation position. After 2 year i have applied for internal transfer in HR Department. but at that time thare is no vacancy available HR so the managment denied the application. So i go for secondment policy of the hospital. In secondment policy you can work in two different departments. So i was working 4 hours in HR and rest 4 hours in Guest relation department. After 6 months one of HR executive resigned from the position and i got transfered as full time HR Executive. And now currently i am working in HR department.
