Hi all,
I am working as a Sr. Executive -HR at one pvt company for past 3 years. By last few months, i am getting negative remarks about my written communication internally with my immediate boss( Sr. Manager-HR). He keep follows on my drafting e-mails & makes me correct even with least subject to the matters. But he keep saying that my speaking English is good
I want to overcome in my written English particularly drafting e-mails
Kindly advice me how to improve my written English

Firstly it is a great sign that you have taken the feedback given by your reporting manager positively and have the mindset to improve. There are many online English writing and speaking courses for free. Read books, newspapers. It will not happen overnight but you should work towards it. Keep practicing. Good Luck!

Hi all,

( I have no idea what you are trying to say here, however based on my interpretation of what I think you are trying to convey I am redrafting the same ) He follows up with me on my email drafts and makes me correct the same including the subject line. However, he keep saying that my speaking skills in English are good.

I want to improve my writing skills in English, particularly my e-mail drafting skills.

Kindly advice me how I can improve my written English.

To improve your written communication skills I suggest the following

1. Have a very clear subject line. In this post you have used an excellent subject line -I want to improve my Written English.

2. Draft logically. You have done this pretty well in the above post.

3. Use short sentences. This is where you have a problem, especially since you are trying to combine a couple of logical thoughts into one sentence.

4. Where possible use bullet points like I have done here. This ensures that each point is separate and clearly expressed.

5. Work on your sentence construction, grammar and vocabulary. This will come with practice. I suggest you draft and then take the help of someone who has good command over English to edit your draft. This will enable you to understand your mistakes and improve.

6. Don't expect quick results and don't be disheartened by criticism. However you should get the feeling that you are improving.

7. Although your boss says that your oral English skills are good, I strongly suggest you ask others to correct you when you speak in English. You must also try your best to speak as often as possible in English. This will enable you to use new words, smoothen your thought process when using English and ensure valuable practice.

8. Read the daily English newspaper and / or magazines aloud.
