Hello All,

There is this peculiar problem faced by me. After my post graduation I have joined this company. Its a mediocre company but the kind of profile offered to me is really challenging.

Currently, my job requires me to travel often all over India. I am open for traveling but due to set corporate travel policy of company I need to travel by 3 tier AC and to stay at properties which are 1 or 2 stars & even at times Non - Ac rooms.

Well, fortunately whenever I traveled before for my personal work or any tours I have always traveled by air & stayed in standard hotels.
Now, Here on my officially trips, I even upgrade the hotel rooms or train travel class by paying from my own pocket.

Kindly give me some suggestion to deal with this situation when your employer expects you to do which you not used to it ? Shall I look for change for this reason ? Coz its been 1 year and I am paying the difference for hotel rooms or upgraded train fare.

I may sound arrogant here But its a genuine concern. I will be glad IF you could give your valuable suggestions. :?:

Dear HRINFOACCOUNT,

You must understand that when you are traveling you are representing your company and most importantly your "Designation" Since you seem to be a fresher with just one year of experience, I believe you must be in a junior role. So for that role..no matter who is working, they can still provide only those travel considerations.

When you go out on a personal trip - you may want to consider about traveling by air. But on-the-job, I guess you must make use of what is been given (in terms of such travel issues)

Your upgradation of travel and accomodation facility was your own choice. So if you think you have to leave just because of "higher end services" not being provided, Its not a great idea. Most of the companies have grades and levels for travel / accomodation criteria, and also depending on emergency of travel. See if such things exist in your company, and suggest you to follow whats relevant to your grade. And other companies - depending on your role, they will design the travel / accomodation facilities.

I doubt if it would make sense if you are leaving because of this issue.

Good Luck!

hi,

I understand it could is difficult to change the standards by which one has been used to. You must be knowing that HR policies are made with lots of considerationand gradewise what a policy allows will depend on what that profile is capable of giving to company. As you are just starting your career and getting new experinces you happen to be in the bracket where facilities may not be ample. You had been paying from pocket for raising the facility to your standard which happens to be personal choice and can not be compared with official limits. In my opinion, it may not be a great idea to leave on this reason even when you decide not to express it. However, choice is with you stilll and you may decide between what is important and of more weightage for you. If inspite of all this the experince that you are getting is enriching your profile then I suugest it is worth being patient. The work exposure will have long lasting impact / contribution. These travel things will be for some months or year...then situations will change. Wish you luck. :p

Hi,
Thanks to both of you for quick reply.
I don't expect my employer to send me by air fare. I am still managing wid Train Travel though I was not used to earlier.
But askng me to stay in Non-AC rooms is not possible for me. Evn at my home I have air conditioning facility.
If I pay from my own to pocket for upgradation of accomdation I sound rude to management as thr r executives travelling with me manage to stay in low standard room.
I can stl understand, that according to company policies only managers are eligible for air fare or standards hotels.. but how do I deal with the mgt's attitude coz they stl have problems if I pay from my own pockets.

Hi,
In your case, it may seem to be a very genuine reason and you may look out for a change if you think. But before doing this, you can speak to the HR and tell him that what you expect from the company.
As every company has certain fixed criterian to provide facilities to its staff, this thing can be sorted out. But, the company should also value its employees as per the work it is extracting from you.
Above all, it depends on comfort. We all used to fix up comfort levels for us and its upto us to leave or keep working.
I hope the company HR can definitely suggest few things to management if there is any scope for 'better facilities'. You must give a try,
speak out and see the result.
Many times people leave of meagre causes and ultimately land up in an organization with 'better infrastructure' but 'poor profile'.
If you think this thing is taking you below the cadre then highlight it.
Good Luck.

HR and management do not count such things as rude unless supported by other related behaviour.
1. You must be thinking aloud about this concern with other employees
2. You must, alternatively, be not much comfortable with your current immediate supervisor (I am not placing the onus on you for this)
3. There are other related concerns like delay in assembling, communicating, and off time interaction further to your comfortable stay in hotels.
Most of such issues can be solved by asking your co-workers travelling together, to join you in your accommodation facility. Make your supervisor feel that you are comfortable reporting to him and he is still your supervisor irrespective of your comfortable style. Do not talk about your problems especially personal issues in adjusting to office environment with others.
Things should be OK.

You have not given enough information to make a judgement. As Asha says you may be in a junior position. You may belog to upper middle class, etc (I am not going to make comments on your perssonal situation). Let me make some general points from my experience.

As Asha and others have said, the company policies are based on levels of the job. However, the travel and subsistance alowances, etc, can always be modified depending upon the economic climate. For example, a company director has opted to travel by economy class on business, due to the present recession; he travels by first class (upgraded) when he travels on personal work (to see parents).

As far as you getting upgraded to higher class travel and staying in better hotels at your cost is concerened, it could pose problems. Let us say you and you colleague or boss travel at the same time. How would it look if you had to be picked up from a posh hotel and your colleague from an ordinary one.

We all have to make sacrifices in life, if we want to achieve something. If you think you are learning something by being employed by that firm, then put up with the inconvenience and continue. If not, find another job and get out. As the saying goes "If you can't stand the heat in the kitchen, get out fast".

It’s very simple, you can spend as per what standard you have, but company reimbursed only that policy allow as your profile. If you are alone for the same profile then its ok, but if there are another then it will be embracement for him. Please take life as it comes, so leaving a job for that is not a good idea, since its everywhere and how much you can change. So better to change your habit / lifestyle for moment, because success has a painful story of struggles and only those succeed who can change themselves according to time.
