Kanmani A
We provide free uniform to staff and cost to workers. Is it compulsory to also provide washing allowance? Uniform is compulsory in our organisation.

Dear Kanmani,

Whether provided free or on cost basis, if wearing uniform during working hours is imposed as a rule to be observed by employees, I think that the employer is bound to pay washing allowance to ensure 100% compliance of the said rule.

Washing allowance is part of maintenance for the employer and hence employer should pay the allowances.

Washing allowance is just an allowance that is a component of salary break up give by companies for various reasons.
It has nothing to do with the cost of washing uniform

As long as you are paying fair wages, it is immaterial whether the amount is in washing allowance shown separately or in the basic salary.

There is nothing in law that requires washing allowance to be given. Its your choice.

Dear Colleague,
As guided by our Colleagues, there are practical differences in the extension of " Washing Allowance" Issue or supply of Uniform is a welfare measure and it is not a statutory requirement, It is a voluntary measure by the employer to support the employees. Here unless otherwise the " Washing Allowance" is a component as part of any 18(1) settlement or 12(3) settlement or under any of the Award of Labour Court or Industrial Tribunal it is not mandatory to extend this Washing Allowance mandatorily. It is the prerogative of the Employer. Some companies pay it as part of Salary break up for various other purposes.

In some companies the Employer provides washing allowance only to selected sections where their nature of job involves high amount of dust etc and not for all but supply uniform to all employees whether they work in shop floor or in office. Now, it is a practical call whether to extend this Washing Allowance is an internal call of the Employer and not a Legal or statutory requirement. Hence Just because employer is issuing Uniform, it does not mean that Washing Allowance also to be provided. It should be linked to the nature of job or work nature whether they work in dust prone areas etc.

For example when we issue Shoes to the employees, then it should not be leading to Shoe maintenance Charges or Polish charges and so on. But it is feel good if you provide but there will be no end for such allowances. Hence please curtail such practices from initial stage itself.
