HI Sheel,
I have done a project on competency mapping in a software firm. Well to proceed wat I did was:
Looked at wat the organization expected out of my project. (it really helps to know this...)
Selection of roles/positions for which to carry out the competency mapping
Read thoroughly the job desc. of these roles
Identify 4-5 top performers in each role(use last 2-3 performance.appraisal. data)
sit with them and prepare a list of competencies they think are relevant to their job performance
sit with their supervisor/managers and identify wat competencies are reqd
preparing a list of competencies before the above interviews come in handy

I have some data with me which I will be pleased to send if you need them.

good document amit. but is competency mapping is used only at performance appraisal activity or for mainly what other purpose it’s used in irg.

I am a Final year undergraduate student in state university.my field is human resource management. now i am doing a research on " contribution of competency based HR practices on employee motivation" plese help me on design the reserch & a questionnaire to address this topic . specially i consider employee attitude on whethe it is ok to apply only competency base for some hr functions or combination with performance based approach for hr functions ,such as promotion,reward. also this questionnaire should address possible hr functions that can be use competency mapping approach.and also if you can send me your project result.I look forward to hearing from you very soon.

Competency Mapping (CM) need not be used for performance management alone. When skill based incentives are on offer, this is viable.
For other purposes, CM can be used for understanding the business preparedness of the individual / team / unit / project / group / branch / organisation.
It can also be used to identify gaps between actual & expected competency. Thus it can act as an input for training.
Competency mapping can also help in role profiling, thereby aiding in career planning of the employee.
These are but a few thoughts, there's a vast ocean that's out there...
