Hi members,
I've been working with this current company for 1.5years but only get a small increment 8month ago. As a Project Engineer with Hons.Degree from a University, I think I am under paid. My colleague has just resigned and that triggered me to look for other jobs / ask for increment. Work is fine but I just think I'm under paid. Now I will have more work loads as his resignation. My other UNI friend's salary are 500-1000 more than what I get now.
Thus, I would like to request for increment letter to be submitted to my manager soon.
Please help.
Thank You very much.

Hi, i'm not Indian but Canadian. I realized one thing, it might be a matter of culture
that is different from north american one so please don't judge me. I'll explain my opinion about this matter.

The way i've seen the letter or the way to write it is nearly as begging your boss for a better life. If you are a professional with good qualification and you do a very good job, you should think that when you send your resume (CV) to a company, you are not "begging" for a job but you are offering your services. It is a totaly different approach.

If i were you i would meet the person in charge and have a nice conversation with him explaining that you think you should have a better salary for the job you are doing etc... A letter could be usefull to bring him in person and tells the same thing that you are discussing with your boss. In Canada it is acceptable to have a good face to face meeting with your superior and it is also seen as a sign of maturity and profesionnalism.

This was just my 2 cents, from the perspective of a Canadian.

Hi there, if you guys allow me to express myself on the subject...
First of all, i might sy that i'm not from India, I am Canadian. It might be because we do have a different culture that we can see things differently but i will explain it the way i see things from a Canadian perspective.

When i send my resume (CV) to a company of course i want the job but i'm not asking them to give me the job, i'm offering them my services. I do think that people with good qualifications and good workers shall be seen as professional. Therefore they should also behave like professionals. It is a total different perspective than "asking for the job".

The same thing applies for salary raise. We usualy have yearly job review and this is usualy the best time to discuss a salary raise. In Canada it is totaly acceptable to have a peaceful face to face meeting with our superior. I would never only send a letter to ask the salary raise but i will manage to take "schedule appointment" with my boss.
Then, i might bring a letter with me that sais the same thing that i told him, as a matter to keep trace of our chat. I would not beg my boss saying to raise my salary, i would probably explain him that i'm working for them since a while, that i think i am doing a very good job (if your boss agrees that you do a good job it will be better).
Then i would explain that i like to work for the company but will all respect i think we should have a review of my salary...

The way i've seen and read things is like if the boss are the big monsters and we are their slaves or puppets. Keep in mind that they are no gods and goes to the toilet like everyone... In Canada if you do a professional job and if you act like a professionnal they shall treat you like one.

Like i said i might be a difference of culture, i'm just trying to understand a bit more.
See i work as a director of HR in Sweden and i really like to learn about multicultural management... Even Sweden vs Canada there is many differences.

All the best!
