Hi Seema, Ashu here. I am also working in an IT company. In our company we have probation period. For senior position we have one month. Again it depends upon the policy of the company. :)

Probation period is each organization varies as per the company policy.
Some have it compulsory for all the employees.
Some have it compulsory till a level
some have it flexible and relaxes it as per the need for the new resource that is joining.
However the practice in industry says that in most of the cases it is relaxed for the officers joining on the senior position for n number of reasons:
it creates problems in adhering to the protocol
some senior employees come with stock option as their salary package then it gets difficult to calculate
no senior official worth his mettle would agree to it as in most of the cases it becomes prestige issue.
I believe to avoid such issues any organization should have a strict policy which should be adhered to in all the levels.
