Thanks Murty,
Well defined by you. I think this is the good option we cake take in this debate.
Ok…I have one question from all. In month of September 07 we given a good raise to one of our employee and we strictly told him to not to disclose ths to anyone otherwise thy will create unnecessary issues but guess wht HE DISCLOSED HIS INCREMENT TO ALL in next 5 minutes.
Then we hold his increment for two months means we revised his salary in November 07. So, please suggest it ws our good decision or not?
Regards,
Priya.

Hello Priya ,
Yes , i do agree that employees at workspace do share their rating with others inspite of HR not allowing to do so ,it may be out of the fact of friend ship or curiosity to know others rating ,HR won't allow to do so because of the Equity theory which we have studied in our MBA programme which says that when an employee knows others Salary /Appraisal then He /She starts compairing his /hers package with other and then starts the things like why my package is less than other and this will Demotivate/Motivate that employee ,thats why HR recommends not to share one's package with other .

hi priya,
first thing I would like to say is that Appraisals are directly related to your performance & increment. So, if your co-worker got more increment than you then it directly indicates that you are not good performer or you lack something which is exactly your co-worker has, who got more increment than you. And,this in turn will lead to jealousy & hate for your co-workers leading to affect environment around your work place.
thanx,
sainath.

Hi,
An Employees salary or Appraisal is confidential.
We have made issues calm down with this policy in our org. Often when Employees compare with thier co workers about the salary or hike in increments , they tend to differ on many occassions but we just calm them down by stating you cannot compare the others person salary as it is against the rules of the co. You both will be given a pink slip for not folwoing the adhearence to the rules!!
We successfully implement even tough everybody knows what is in the other BasKeT !!

Hi Priya,
I feel the instruction to employees to keep their increments a secret affair doesnot hold any meaning.
In any case workers move in and out in groups and they donot hesitate to share any secrets which they have with their co-workers on whom they have faith.
A management must always be transparent in its dealings with its employees.
Appraisals are done to show how an employee fairs with regards to the goals he/she had set for himself/herself and accordingly he/she is rewarded /punished.

Hello Priya,

I also completely agree with your point that why HR has this added Job responsibility of informing employees about their appraisals indivisually and its confidentiality, inspite they share it with their colleagues the minute they are out of the office premises.

And why only appraisals, even the salary of the employees are meant to be a confidential affair, but yet it has the same story.

What I believe is that if everything is fare and justified, there is no need of hiding anybody's salary or increment. Why an employee should not know what is his colleague in the same job earning and what is his boss getting?

Infact I believe, If an employee is aware of such details about the salary and increments, it makes him aware of his position and knows where he stand in comparison of his colleagues, which in turn give him a motive and reason to work hard and improve. And if he is aware of the salary of his superiors, it again gives him motivation and aspiration to someday reach at the same level which will again make him work more hard.

The only requisite thing here is the right approach within the organization which needs to be developed by the HR Team.

I hope one day there is an organization developed, where everything is fair and justified....and is open for everyone... what would count is only efforts and hard work.

Regards,

Priyanka
