Hello seniors,
Can someone please guide me on implementing HR policies in a cafe business chain start-up company? How can we manage the leave policies for the staff working in the outlets and should they be given week-offs? We have already added accommodations and provided food also to the staff members. What other benefits can we add to retain the employees and avoid turnover? How can the leave policies be different for the employees working in the office compared to the staff members?

It will very helpful if anyone can guide me through this.

Dear Ayushi Yadav,

If your company has cafes in multiple states, then you need to follow the provisions of the Shops and Establishment Act of the respective state. It includes the policies on leave, discipline etc.

As far as management policies are concerned, these can be uniform irrespective of the location of the cafe.

The surprising thing about your post is your query on the weekly off. You have asked, if should they be given a weekly off. A person has a doubt about the basics of HR Management and yet occupies a position in the HR department. This kind of travesty could happen only in India! I wish you had read the provisions of the Shops and Establishment Act before raising the query! Though more than seventy-five years passed since acquiring independence if queries are raised in the public forum on basic civil liberties, then it goes on to show the superficialness of freedom!

Since your company has provided food and accommodation to the staff, your company wishes to do a trade-off with the weekly. Sorry, this is not possible. The Shops and Establish Act does not permit that!

Lastly, let us keep aside the statutory requirements about the weekly off aside for a while. In today's job market, who will work for all seven days? Businesses grow when an organisation employs the "employees" and not the slaves who are ready to follow the diktats of their master!

My views are forthright. But then the truth need not be sugarcoated each time. Hence the forthrightness!

Thanks,
