I think he is testing your patience. I work in UK as a Estate Protection Officer, with 14 years of experience.

Recently the company has recruited 8 other officers from a contractor, now to work in this industry it is very easy, someone only needs an SIA licence after a 4 days course.

Now, some of them are barbers, mechanics, waiters and etc.... the attitudes they are giving me, my GOD!

I tried to report some of them, I tried to get them to be professional, but since the majority are clowns I look like an Idiot together with the Security Manager. Before they start to sabotage me, I have made a list of how to sustain.

1- Have a smile on all the times

2- Be always professional at Work

3-Don't teach or change anybody

4-Do not advice anyone

5- Never answer a question that has not been asked

6- Your brain is not for the public

7- If a question is too complicated to answer, say, " I don't know."

8- Never try to correct anybody, even if you know they are wrong

9- People in general will never appreciate the good you do for them

10- When people speak, let them, smile and listen to them, they will love you

11- When you will speak for no reason they will get you to their level

12- When a verbal confrontation starts, Stop your brain and listen to your heart beat and smile and just say O.k, sorry.

13- Keep your mouth shut, you are not the BOSS, if they play let them,if they sing let them and if the are messing around let them, because you are not the one doing it. "Jo jeisa karega wo Weissa bharega"

14- Among 30 people why should ou mouth only need to be opened, keep quiet with a smile you will make progress.

I have written my rules to be able to have better days at work, if not they were going to report me to the BOSS..lol

Or, you may approach your boss asking him to get you an office, so you could shut the door.

As abdool said, it is the one side of coin and perfect. But a coin has another side, if a manager (esp new joined) sustains such rude behavior, he get wrong impression. He cannot achieve change which is demanded by Top Management.
Top Management\'s KRA cannot be satisfied by Manager. He gets into trouble to achieve KRA with non-performing guys. The real story starts here. A new Manager needs new/extra people to achieve target but Top management does not give. The pressure rises on new manager.I think if company has good past record OR set rules then only it can be helpful for manager to decide.

Dear Geetika,

You would appreciate, there is no dearth of such examples where some employees always behave in a nasty, irratating manner and continue to distrupt general discipline of the offfice environment. Since you are new to your organisation, you might have been feeling a little odd to speak with this fellow directly. I am sure, the type of behaviour this peon displays in the office would not have been liked by others also but they are keeping quite because they are waiting for someone else to initiate. Human tendency is such that we always would tolerate nuisance, ill behaviour, turn a blind eye and will wait for someone else to bell the cat.

With my experience, I can advice you this. Please call this guy in your office and do a small counseling. Tell him that since he is the senior most employee of the organisation, all new employees should look up at him for good behaviour, direction and support. He should lead by example and try to set the tone in a postive note so that the new employees learn values, good behaviour and good attitude from no body else other than the senior most employee of the organisation. Counselling has magical power and if done properly, it will definitely bring a sea change in his behaviour.

You can also add that we all like his good taste of music but listening songs in high volume not only disturbs all of us, as we mostly work on something which needs good application of mind, but also disrupts the general discipline /decorum of the office, which is not right. As a good counsellor you may suggest him to use ear phones if he really loves music so much (although it is not keenly advised).

I think, this small counseling session will work wonder to your advantage. After all this, if it doesn't work out then please don't wait any further. Discuss the same with your fellow colleagues and take one of them with you and explain the same to your senior. I think, this problem will be sorted out for sure.

Hi Geetika,
As Rajesh rightly suggested , you are new and probably your dept is new too. Don't Jump on conclusion. You need not start changing people from day one especially if they are old staff. Take time to study each one of them. And then create a Code of conduct and decorum policy which includes attendance, leave,the office conduct, dress code and of course on loud noise, mobile ring tones etc. Get it approved by your boss and circulate it to all for acknowledgement. You will see the change.
You can actually win the war without fighting it. Please understand that an HR is not an individual but a department in itself. It cannot have personal opinion. Hence let not people point fingers to you. Your policies (WIN-WIN ones) should do the needful.

It is quite strange that your organization does not have any code of conduct - Personal & Behavioral Conduct.
Rather than confronting management with his ill deeds, incorporate this VERY IMPORTANT clause in your HR Manual / Employee Handbook immediately (a defensive way). Secondly, you can have a counseling session with him, if possible first informally when everyone is around & if it doesn't work; formally like suggested by seniors above. This is pertaining to his behaviour mentioned above.
I like the way Mr. Abddool has jotted down the points & shown a discrete way to behave in the organization BUT I strongly believe that HR Department CANNOT / SHOULD NOT follow the same as one of the primary role of HR is to bring in good change & improve company environment.

Dear Geethika,
As an HRD manager you should try to reform an employee as first prference.Call him to your desk/cabin and explain to him about need to maintain office decorum and as a person responsible to achieve this how you are advising him to improve in his own interest.At the same time the implicit message must go that you are a person with velvet gloves but hand of steel.If he does not improve , issue him a warning letter on your own asking for an explanation within 48hrs.If he does not pay heed to this then talk to your boss and tell him frankly that you are going to initiate disiplinary action against him.One more thing, don't make it very obvious to others that you are new and yet to get along with staff ,or you are hesitant to take any harsh decisions.Remember that no one is indispencable in this world let alone in an organisation.
