Dear George,
I would say that it all depends on the perception of the subordinate. If they think the bosses are not treating them properly then how much ever boss tries to help him out he will never come up. On the other hand if a subordinate thinks it is for the betterment of his L'ship skills then he will definitely take things in right spirit.:!:

Hi
With my working experience of 5 years in same company, I was much fortunate to have a Boss who was more than a friend. What is important is that the manner in which you treat and look to your Boss. As on human mind, if the things give him a mental satisfaction the things will be good for him. Always try to impress your Boss not with words but with your work. In simple words- Work with your boss smarter way, not the harder way.

Hi George,
Good Question! Very few become leaders after having become bosses. But Bosses can't be friends is difficult to judge because most of the time when they are with you they are really very nice if you are talented and you fulfill their needs with your competence. You know Huge Prather wrote in Notes to Myself that Liking is a function of need. Let me tell you whatever be the level of friendship the moment you are no more capable of fulfilling the needs, the friendship slowly begins to fade and you don't even ever realise wha has happened. If you are not very useful to them then perhaps they would maintain a distance and keep you busy with routine.
Bosses can be friends but for that please give them confidence that you are dependable and competent. It's hard work but it is possible.

Hi George,
Boss is also a human being and he is not the ultimate hence he may be expecting the same type of treatment from his boss. Most of the people in higher postions are well matured and they knows pretty well that until and unless his team members performs he can not survive. In the changed scenario every boss has to mingle with the team and the get the work done for his survival.
There may be one or two such type of people. Let us not generalize and also look at the best.

'Boss is always right' concept has gone. you don't think that how boss behave with you or how his/her nature is. think only one thing that what knowledge he/she possess and think whether that knowledge may be useful to you, than react. You would find your boss good. because your attitude have changed.

But keep mind if you think that your boss does not have knowledge enough for you, than don't respect him/her, just do your best.

I DISAGREE WITH YOU THAT BOSSES ARE NOT GOOD GUIDES OR FRIEND.MY case is totally different I have got a boss who cares like a parent ,educate me like a teacher ,protect like a shield and play with me like a child .
Hence its not like that.Bosses are not always so.Bosses can be like my boss

The positon that bosses hold, can't afford to be your friend, it all depends on how you perform in the organisation. If you've a consistent performance they will at times treat you as a friend but this they can't continue forever as it might feel them a sense of insecurity...

Bossess are not always Bossy.

In my career of 14 years I have worked under Bossess who have been very helpful and able guides and mentors. They have thought me the most important thing and that is man management, which you never learn in business schools.

When we get down to practical working, the approach has to be different. we cannot simply follow rules & regulations without being human. This is what i have been thought by all my bosses.

My Boss from my previous company was sometimes so rude and rough that I use to be disturbed almost everyday. He was always behid my back to improve my writing skills. It was not that I was bad in writing, but then he wanted me to improve it further. His tag line, "Touch the Heart". This is were I was lacking and he pushed me to be what i am today.

Today in my current organisation, I am considered to be a good communicator. This is only because of my Boss.

I think, we have to agree that if all of them are good everytime, then there will never be a learning process and we will remain the same through out without changing.
