There can be so many resaons for those people to not to respect you and you are feeling that they are not respecting you because you are young.
If you have got the job because of recommendation then they might not respect you.
If you do not have BASIC Subject Matter Expertise then also they might not respect you.
As a HR Manager, you need to have control over so many things but if you are not doing it in the way that is expected from you and rather doing silly blunders, then also they won't respect you. They have hired HR Manager and not a Secretary...but if you are not behaving like a HR Manager...then they will not respect you.
Holding a designation is not that important but your work is.
So, look within, what is the problem and try to solve it.
If you need my help...then you can mail me at .

Dear Sharma,
A lot of very good suggestions have been made to you. Please go though the posts and note them.
Do realise that a lot depends on your own behaviour, the environment (i.e. the type of organisation you have joined), and your perspective towards your responsibilities, your way of work, and your ability to work with your seniors.
Try your level best to make a success out of your assignment. Only if nothing works, look for another opening.
All the best.

Hi,
Congrats first of all for getting into Human Resources. Its a tough and demanding job abut at the end it gives you a lot of satisfaction and a sense of achievement.
Coming to your problem, age is not at all a barrier in workplace. It all lies in the perception. Believe that you know everything in this world, and have this confidence that anything and everything you do is the best and no one could have done it any better. And from now on be assertive: in terms of your talk, your action and most importantly take pride in being an HR. Just put this in practice and you'd see the difference in others.
Being humble doesn't mean that you are having low self esteem. Just give it back to people when it matters the most.
Cheers!!!

Ti be young and holding a senior position can be really challenging in reality. I can understand what you must be going through.
I faced similar situation in 1972 - my first job. Age 20 plus. Got promoted and was heading two departments - Exports & Machinery Purchase. Directly reporting to MD, who remained mostly out of India.
No guidance from any body, only envy and jealousy. Then, I decided to hold the bull by its horns:-
a) I grew a moustache.
b) I befriended the 55 year old Chief Engineer. Played Bridge with him in the Company Club. (For technical guidance on Machinery Purchase, my contact with him was frequent.)
c) Approach - The best of manners and respect for elders.
d) Learnt the work in depth and details.
e) I was good in written and spoken English. Used this talent to my highest advantage.
f) I tried and with time learnt to use humour for greater impact.
I never looked back.
See if the above can show some direction to you.

If you improve the above things in systematic manner, the Leader ship qualities will automatically comes.
However, I agree that age & gaintic personalities provides certain plus points in normal matters but it doesn't matter in profession.
In your concern, you try to Ask instead of Advise & Be obedient instead of authoritative.
