Dear Prof Soni,
Homepage | Dictionary.com defines a word skill as " the ability, coming from one's knowledge, practice, aptitude, etc.". Wordweb defines skills as "An ability that has been acquired by training".
In simple words, application of knowledge is called as skill. A skilled person uses his/her body parts while applying the knowledge. A skill is measured against consistency in output in a given span of time. Can anyone acquire consistency without practice?
MBA students are at learning stage. They have to put their learning into practice and then it will become skill. How can you measure their skill at this amateur stage? If you do this it would be unfair.
How can you expect MBA (HR) to know salary processing or MBA (Marketing) to handle the perfect sales call?
At this stage you can measure their knowledge and not the skill. You can make them knowledgeable by exposing to other's failures. However, skill mapping would tantamount to counting your chickens before they are hatched.
Thanks,
Dinesh V Divekar

Dear Mahesh,
You have not given enough information to help you. What exactly do you mean by "Skill Mapping"? For example, as an academic in a university I was involved in drawing up a Skills Matrix to indicate what all skills an under graduate, an MBA student, etc should have when (s)he finished a course. Then based on this each module tutor had to identify the skills that would be covered in that module. Overall, all the skills had to be covered.
Dinesh V Divekar is right for skills acquired at work. However, certain basic and transferable skills can be covered during a course. For example, see http://psu.edu about the skill in using cocept maps; http://jmd.sagepub.com/cgi/content/abstract/20/2/103 for differences in perceptions of employers, staff and students (abstract only); http://jmd.sagepub.com/cgi/content/abstract/14/2/2

Dear Mr. Soni,
At any stage of life an individual reflect both ; knowledge as well as skill.
Even a child is taught to understand the importance of meal and way of taking the meal.
Future managers can be assessed on basic B&A skills. It is well understood that at the age of 21-25; everybody has got the understanding of these traits.
We have to first define and list various skills.
We can assess them on how good they are in listening!! We hope everbody understand the meanining and value of listening. After this test we can further provide them knowledge and add value.

Dear Soni Sir,
I appreciate your concern. Mapping skills at this stage (studying) is very important and would be a wise decision, instead somebody else in the real world (may be an employer) will map it.
Broadly we can differentiate SKILLS in these categories;
First: Foundational skills or basic skills, those skills learned through education; like reading, writing, maths, speaking and listening (even eating and drinking too)...further up to job specific technical skills. In your case, foundational skills would be up to the syllabus taught to mms students. (these skills need not to be mapped separately, you must be having university exams)
Second: "The skills" required to apply these fondational and basic skills. It includes self-management, self-learning, communication skills, problem-solving, planning and organizing, enterprising mind set, team-work and skills to use the technology effectively.
(These skills needs to be mapped in detail)
Third: "The skills" to maintain and grow with the skills mentioned above.
Question is HOW and WHAT? Probably I can help you out.
If you need any further information can contact me on
