Hi Friends, I have been asked a question in HR interview. Question is: If a permanent and efficient employee in a company comes and asks for every Saturday he wanted holiday (Sunday is however regular holiday, what would you answer and what would you do? Company has 6 days working i.e. Monday to Saturday. It would be appreciable if anybody can tell me the right answer for this question. I tried to tell few answers, but the interviewer was not convinced. Thanks.

You can talk to him with the company policy in place and the requirement of him working on a Saturday (may be due to client constraints) and can always tel that you will look into it. Regards Kannan

Hi Kannan, One of my answers included the same what you said. But still its not the way to tell the employee as he came up with a compulsory need of taking Saturday holiday regularly. Even I told that we can ask him to work on Sunday if he takes holiday on Saturday. Note that its not leave or Weekly off, but its holiday like Sunday. How its possible for one employee? Because we cant loose the employee coz he is an old employee, and also efficient. I tried all answers I know. But not suitable answer. Senior HRs must be knowing the right answer to this question. Please somebody help.

Dear team,
first we have to make him clear that one has to obey & respect policies and guidelines of company which are made keeping in view of organisation growth and organisation cannot depend on one person though he is so effient. If we start obeying one request, he will come up with another benefit. Hope my understanding is right.
Thanks

I would want to know how may leaves are permissible for the company. Second I would want to know the position of this person. ie I wouldnt want to take action on a CEO :-)

The answer would be to ask the employee to get an approval from his superior in written. In all likelihood the superior will not give such an approval. Even if he does one must be "assertive" enough to say NO in case the employee has exceeded the permissible number of leaves that can be taken.

The fact is that there is no right answer. If there was, you would have found it in every book or in every forum, or would be taught in every management classroom. An employee may be a star in the company but you have to remove the diseased chicken from your farm before it infect anyone else, even if it lays the most number of eggs. Your employee needs to be convinced not with your answer but with the fact that you can really do what you claim to do. Phrases like "I think I will..." or "I might do...." or "one option would be..." are not as convincing as "I'll have to take action..." or "I believe that one must follow rules....". Using power words also help in convincing such as "I will assertively tell..." "I will definitely refuse if..."

First HR should find why suddenly he is asking for saturdays off, because all these days he was working on saturdays. It might be some health related issue or any other personal problem.HR can give him a chance to work from home temporarily or until the problem solved.
It depends on the nature of job also.If employee's present in the office is mandatory, then HR should convince him to work on saturdays may be with flexible timings.
If he insist no work on saturdays either office or home, then it depends on the policy of the company.
@Prashantgk-If you can share your answers, it will be helpful for others also.

Thanks friends for your comments!
@Avinash, the position of the employee say Sr.Executive who is working for many years in the organization. If it is CEO, wouldn't you take action on him? Lol :-)
As Avinash mentioned, I think it is proper way to ask the employee to get an approval from his superior in written. That's what we can do as HR. It also seems right that HR must be authoritative and cut to the point in his action. But still if the employee insists to consider his case and comes directly to HR and asks, I think we have to investigate the reason behind it as Telina Murugesan cited. These are very practical issues! Any more comments?

See the posibility of deciding all saturdays as holidays by convincing the Management by working everyday ( all 5 days ) extra hours working say 1.1/2 hours over and above normal 8 hours working.

hi, simple answer for your question.Kept office alternative saturdays. Employers also get holiday on alternative saturday know.1week 6days working day another 1week 5days working day.Because employers satisfaction is most important than to office rule.Employers have to feel free than only he/she can concentrate on their work fully..
