Dear member,
You wish to do a PhD., but without appearing for the entrance test such as UGC-NET. Why?
I do not know the context of your query. However, let me surmise and ask whether you have some setting already, and is the acquisition of a PhD. just a formality?
Parallel to the UGE-NET is the RET conducted by each state. Though RET has less standing compared to UGC-NET, it holds water as it is possible to get admission to the central universities. Following is the degree of importance of PhD. in descending order:
a) JRF + PhD. from the central university
b) UGC-NET + PhD. from the central university
c) RET + PhD. from the central university
d) UGC-NET + PhD. from deemed university
e) RET + PhD. from deemed university
f) UGC-NET + PhD. from the private university
g) RET + PhD. from the private university
h) PhD. from the private university
Whatever the field you choose, if you don't have a setting for the job, then you will have tough competition from the PhDs. from the categories (a) and (b) above. I say so because recently a vacancy for the post of Assistant Professor published by Banaras Hindu University (BHU) attracted 70 applications of which about 25 were from (a) and (b) categories!
By the way, please note that UGC is becoming stricter and recently barred three private universities. Click the following link to read the news:

Therefore, before embarking on your research journey, I request you to be cautious. Acquiring a PhD. should be a matter of pride but I know a few cases wherein despite acquiring the highest degree, people hide it. Please do not be one amongst them.
Thanks,
