Every organisation has rules and regulations which has to be followed by employees.
When any violation or breach of laid down rules takes place enquiry is to be conducted to establish what went wrong, who is responsible etc.
The enquiry may end up blaming someone after following a laid down procedure (basically rules of natural justice).
the procedure of taking action against the violator is known as disciplinary procedure.

Dear Parimal,

The term " discipline " has different meanings depending up on the context. In the realm of employment it refers to the observance of the pre-determined rules of conduct by employees as per the contract of employment. Disciplinary Process or Disciplinary Action as called generally is a corrective as well as punitive measure to ensure the contributory role and commitment of the employees to the organizational goals and its effective functioning even without the slightest deviation from the established rules of the organization.Disciplinary Process, therefore, implies the remedial action taken by the employer against those employees failing to observe the rules of discipline in the course of employment by way of omission or commission. Whenever transgression of the rules of discipline is noticed on tthe part of any employee, the employer or the superiors authorised by the employer is empowered to initiate disciplinary action in this regard. But such an action can not be arbitrary violative of the Principles of Natural Justice. Simply put, the charges of violation or misconduct should be specific and the delinquent should be awarded all reasonble opportunities to defend himself. In order to ensure this, an enquiry into the charges or Domestic Enquiry has to be conducted by appointing an independent person or any other superior and his findings are obtained. After this, the disposal of the disciplinary proceeding either by award of punishment or otherwise is left to the well-defined discretion of the disciplinary authority. If the rules provide so, there can be an Appellate Authority to hear and dispose of appeal if any, against the orders of the disciplinary authority.
