Hello Seniors

I am writing this for an advice for my friend, who is a real hard worker and dedicated to whatever he does. Due to circumstances, he had a severe shoulder pain and doctors found that he has a partial tear in the shoulder bones. He is from an automobile industry and he recently got placed in the manufacturing company of Jaguar. It was very tough for him to get through the interviews but still he got as the Company really found him worth for the job.

After his joining, as he started working he was put in different sections in which some of the depts, his work was very hectic due to his shoulder problems, it was paining badly. The co. already told him that, he will be shifted to diff. depts initially for 3 months. Now he is in a situation that he cannot continue the job as his hand really hurts and not able to work. He may quit from this job as he spoke to his HR and she asked him to take leave for one month and then join back but he is in a situation where he will not b able to continue because the work is going to be the same even after a month.

He also got an offer from Volkswagen, when he was selected for Jaguar and didn't join them, and now he called them to know whether the vacancy is still there and they had given him a positive reply. My question is whether he needs to tell the new co. that he already has a problem with his shoulder and doing certain works will hurt badly or should he not mention initially and join them. He really wants the job. There will be sections where he can work easily without hurting his shoulders. but not every co. need to hear all this as they want productivity. Kindly help me on this to take a wise decision.

1. If the Job at Volkswagen require more physical fitness, if the person discloses everything, they may decline the offer
We can not assume that they will post him in sections where he can work easily without hurting his shoulders.
2. If the person continue working with current firm, due to fitness issues, he can not perform well and end of the day, he may need to switch to some other job
My suggestion is to disclose everything about physical fitness to Volkswagen and wait for their response. If positive, join there or other wise forget it and continue with current company. Parallel to this, consult some traditional Ayurveda Practitioners and try to get the shoulder pain, cured.

Dear Jeena,
If your friend joins new company without informing what is he suffering, he is sure to face same problem. Quitting will not be advisable every 3 months & more so from brands you've mentioned.
Like the HR of his current company mentioned he can take rest for a month & meanwhile also try to convince them if he can be moved to a department where physical strain is less. On the contrary this will keep his doors open for the management to come to a conclusion & offer him best.
In other case if he has decided to quit & join somewhere else, he must clarify that on medical grounds he will not be able to take up certain tasks / profile or should apply for positions where he is comfortable.
NOT DISCLOSING / HIDING FACTS is a severe act of misconduct which might also lead to termination. Act wisely.

The very first thing is that there is nothing like to “disclosing any details in the beginning of Employment” (Subject Line) as this friend of yours is still not an employee of them (New Employer) but get an offer.

Second, as he already granted leave to take rest and medication by present employer, he must respect for this and must not go other way or look for alternative (New EMPLOYMENT) instead of taking rest and proper treatment.

It is acceptable that he is not well and not able to work now and for this granted leaves by present employer but what about, if he found some more difficulties in work with new employer in future if he joins them. Medical Leave he can get with new employer and getting by the present employer too but in my understanding, he must decline this new offer and take good care and proper medication. Subsequently he needs to join the present employer and do his work sincerely but if HE STILL WANNA LEAVE THIS PRESENT JOB, MUST TELL THE SAME TO PRESENT EMPLOYER FIRST. Perhaps, he can get some solution by present employer or shifted/assigned some jobs that he can perform better and more easily till return in old form/stage of working.

Second, I also in favor of telling the truth the new company as this is an unfortunate but actual problem he have and undergoing the treatment for this.

Dear Jeena,

We start with the same premise your friend is in. Every employee is destined to look for a job that can offer him all cushions he may need. You have mentioned the nature of the new job. It seems, it will allow him to deliver.

Your post mentions , its not the task alone but the surmounting pressure, that made your friend rethink about his employment. How does he weigh the work pressure at the new role ?

Being honest to himself and weighing the pros and cons will help him decide how far can he stretch himself. He has already realised his limits.

The new employer might not continue him, if he cant deliver, let alone, hiding facts .

Ironically, our limits are often an opportunity, to look for a new option. Guess your friend needs to consider that. Help him explore all the options within the current and new role . Once he is more aware of which job he can deliver for the long run, he can ask for it with the new employer.

Offering more specialised capabilities in the area where he can deliver effortlessly , will add the real value to the employer . We wish him all the best!
