Hi,
Just today, I received a call from Delhi from a company. The executive told me that she is conducting a reference check for a student who completed a non-formal course at one of our Authorized Institutes. She provided details of the certificate and mark sheet, mentioning that the student passed the course in 2002. The course itself was a computer course, specifically in hardware networking.
I had to request someone to retrieve the dusty records from the record room to verify the information. She emphasized the urgency, stating that she needed the verification today as the candidate was expected to join by Monday. Typically, other employees might have informed her that it would take 2-3 days, considering the weekend as holidays and the non-official nature of the task. However, understanding the significance of reference checks as a management professional, I managed to provide the verification within 10 minutes.
I am now curious about the trend of companies outsourcing reference checks. Is it truly beneficial? Reference checks for job roles are understandable, but conducting reference checks for non-formal education, especially when the employer already has the marksheets and certificates, seems excessive.
How effective are these checks, particularly when educational institutions delay the process? What actions can be taken if an offer letter has been issued before the reference check is completed, as mentioned by the executive who requested the data urgently today?
I would appreciate comments from anyone working exclusively as a reference checker, as they may shed some light on this practice.
Thank you.
