Optimum number of hours at work could be 8.
I am an HR in a Software Company and I find that while there are people who put in exactly 8 hours and are able to finish their work for the day... there are others who put in 12 to even 18 hours in a day. You could tell your employees at your firm that they need to put in 8 hours of productive work on one business day... Again this is a topic of vast discussion. I have people in my organization working for 20 hours per day.... working real hard... how could we provide compensation in such cases ... any suggestions...

Optimum working hours in true sense are between 2.5 hours to 3.5 hours. As per factories act , employer is bound to give a break after 4 hours of work. The idea behind the same is that in given enviroment one can continue to work with best output starts from 2.5 hours to 3.5 hours. Even ILO is of the opinion that every human being when subjected to certain environment gives best output when he/s feel fresh. This is only possible when we let them relax.

Hi Deepali
Frankly speaking i do not agree with the concept of flexitimings.
Reason behind the same is that
1. You lose discipline , which is a basic requirement.
2. You add more cost towards cost of production.
3. You lose one to one contact, which is required on daily basis.
4. You lose whole concept of industrial / establishment working.
So when we talk of flexitimings we put an individual to work on 24 hour basis. This leads to a number of problems. As human being the tedency is to remain relax or under tension. The extreme positions always hamper the quality and quantity of the product. S/he become so independent that realy confine the individual to a particular area further leading to lower development in thought process. For balancing an activity we are required to subject an individual to theenviroment where s/he can interact with others to give best possible results. The flexitiming concept generated by IT industry is in my opinion is doning more harm than good to an industrial culture.

hi anilanand,
well my point of flexitimings was dependent upon the company's product. when there is time frame of lets say 7 to 12 . dats now duration is 17 hrs. if it asked from d employees to give atleast 7 to 8 hrs den i dun find any reason of low performance. den u talk abt interactions, if d employees have to give 8 hrs to office , d interaction wud b dere (now again it depends upon d company's culture.) now wht do u think giving 10 hrs. to office will b more productive den wrkin for 7 to 8 hrs. frankly speaking on an average an employee actually works for 4 to 5 hrs. sincerely n whtever d productive he does, is in dis duration only rest he just passes time, so if he is given liberty to adjust his timings acc. to dis, he may prove to be more productive bt yes here i wud like to add d work to be finished shud b clearly told. wht say?/

Dear Deepali
Spare the rod and spoil the child. The theory is still applicable and proving its worth. In my opinion every employee irrespective of position / designation should attend office in the morning to discuss and draw
statergy for further action.
What do you say?

Hi Deepali,
I work for a US based company and they believe in work hrs to be limited to 8hrs but the Indian counterparts think otherwise...we are made to work sometimes even on saturdays..with 0 productivity..
I think flexi hours are good when companies don't believe in work hrs limited to 8hrs...

hi kopal,
well i really believe the concept of flexitimings is going to increase productivity, though some constraints are always dere but since in dis fast pace of life , an internal satisfaction is necessary which is most of the times we get when we gather in family parties , when we interact with our families etc.. Just think of a man working in a manufacturing company and wife working in a bpo or in an IT company.
what do u say????
