Dear all,
Well,the staff working in a particular department in our company is having a problem with their boss.In that department we are having around 24 employees in their early 30's.
Their complaint is that their boss never listen or appreciate their staff's view.He wants the things to work in the way he wants.Whenever they go to him with some new plan,he just say no & very stuborn with his decisions.Its not one or two,but everyone wants him to be replaced.Its like they want to implement some new technology and he is against the technology.
He is a very senior person with around 30-40 yrs of experience.Even if we go for counselling,he will say baby keep quiet orlese look for a new job.
What to do in this case?

Thanks for bringing up unique situations, like the length of skirts issue, working couple problems and now a supposedly 'tyrant' boss.

My dear, it would be advisable if you can throw some light by way of more details on on the type of organization, size, hierarchial structures and reporting relationship etc.

For example, if its manufacturing organization, then having a boss of 30-40 years experience is a boon (or rather a miracle) !!

On the other hand, if its a Software or IT company, then one wonders where from you got a boss with 30-40 years experience ??

Hope you understand, what I mean.

Kindly devote some time and effort on giving more information; before you expect CiteHR members to put in their efforts, which ultimately will not be taken into consideration by you.

Moreover, on the "bosses", there is a lot of material in this site itself, which you are advised to SEARCH.

A few points, which might be of interest to you :
  • You have asked "What to do in this case?". Well is there anything that needs to be done, or can be done ?? The Boss is only doing the job entrusted to him by the management, and he can not be faulted for not accomodating the views/whims of his reportees.
  • Somewhere I read : Rule No. 1 - The Boss is always Right. Rule No. 2 - In case the boss is wrong, read rule No. 1.
  • The boss seems to believe in economizing operations. He does the same while using his words - "keep quiet or else look for a new job." You must take his word for it, since he does not seem to mince words or acts funny.
  • I am sure, if he has been made the Boss to 24 employees in their early 30's; the management must have kept in mind lots of qualifying criterion.
  • There is an old saying that "You can chose your subordinates, but not your Boss".
  • I would suggest, INSTEAD OF FIGHTING THE BOSS, CO-OPERATE IN ACHIEVING THE OBJECTIVES OF THE ORGANIZATION.
  • I do not think age has anything to do here, he is a Boss not the Dad of the employees. Perhaps, what your colleagues are looking for is a Chief Fun Officer in their Boss. Well, it does not necessarily happen that way !!

I am sorry, if I have DISAPPOINTED you, by not providing any sensational, spicy stories of old bosses and young subordinates, which you might have been looking for.

As rightly said by raj Kumar, he is carrying more responsibility than others. How can he simply ignore the constructive criticisms or improvements? Somewhere misunderstanding lies between employees & their boss. First identify those and remove for cordial relationship and collective delivery.

Dear Mr.Hansdah,
Well,its into Design & Engineering.Strength of 2000 employees.
12 different departments working with different engineering groups.
All the employees are having 5-8 years experience with good academic record.
As its a MNC we have operations all over the world,so we do have short skirts,couples working in the same firm.As well a HOD like this,who is stuborn with his decisions.
Well,its not a sensational story.I have been into Manufacturing,Infrastructure;there too I have seen these type of problems.Its really amazing for me that being so experienced you people never came across such problems and it looks filmy.

I do agree with your comment.
A boss can never ignore the constructive criticisms or improvements.
But it was not a case of single employee,its pertaining to all the employees in his department.All the employees working are from IIT,so we can't say they are fools or we can't ignore their comments.

I feel activity titled 'Towers of Strength' could be better options to minimize the vacuum generated through improper coordination among the staff.
I had done this exercise in one of our Project Managers Meet in Sweden, thought that this could help you in channelizing the proper coordination.

Dear Kamal,
Please remember one thing that Boss is always Boss. On any point saying straight NO to Boss will not be in favour of juniors. Please handle Boss in a diplomatic way. For example, if your Boss wants something to be done which u feel may not be proper way, tell your Boss in a very polite way that whatever u r saying is good and benefit the organisation, but also request him to take a view of your point of view. I think no Boss will say NO. This may help your employees to built up rapport with the Boss.
