Hii Mahesh,
It depends on size of the organization & Vary from company to company.
There can be 1 HR for small establishment & in some of the big establishment there are 4 HR in one team (L& D team,Recruitment,PMS,Payroll,OD).In HR itself there are 4 or plus minus team.
Mostly the hierarchy is:
VP-HR/Head HR/GM - HR
Senior Manager - HR
Assistant Manager - HR
Jr./ Sr. Executive - HR
Management Trainee - HR

I think a good ratio is one HR employee to every 100 employees. After 100, it starts to get a little more difficult to keep on top of things
(The ratio) depends on how much the company understands and appreciates what HR professionals do.

Hi,
In medium type companys , it is difficult to convince the management about the important of HR team expansion even though the strength is above 500. One solution to this problem is to propose a small ERP for HR as such companys can not afford SAP or any other costly ERPs.

Dear All,

I did't find any reasonable reply. Please observe my submission all. if at all any wrong you can advise me.

In earlier days means before the multi-national companies culture entered, it was used to call as the Personnel Department to the dept which is taking care about the employees of the organisation. Now-a-days after the maximum multinational companies culture entered specially software companies the word of HR dept become popular. Even there were HR branches in universities, in employments the term Personnl dept only was renowned.

The result becomes to the stage that every organisation now using the terminology of HR only without knowing what is HR. The result, the private companies in maximum are engaging employees on name of HR but they are not providing such facilities required for the HR department. Every employer speaks about HR values and HR activities but maximum employers are engaging HR personnel in very very little quantity where the tremundour pressure putting on HR personnel.

Tthe maximum managements are treating the HR department as the service providing department but not as the organisation development dept. In maximum companies the HR dept is being treating in least category and there is no recognisation to HR personnel even after spending years of service. The Managements are expecting the following from the HR department :

- Service providing to all other departments.

- Service providing to all company management personnel

- Service providing to all employees of the organisation

- All administrative activities

- All Statutory Actvities

- All service activities

- All Liaisoning Activities

- All Industrial Relations activities

- All relations maintainance activities

- All Medical facilities related activities

- All accidents related activities

But they are not providing sufficient manpower in HR department. As I observed, even after working 500 or more employees also, a single HR person is managing in maximum companies. As per my experience for first 50 persons One HR person is enough. After 50, for every one hundred employees one HR person is required for the 100% compliance in all aspects i.e. if the HR terminology instead of Personnel dept.

Instead of observing all these, people are replying at their level.

Hi Sudhir,
Its great that your previous co gave adequate streangth in HR team. But I have observed that some group companys having multi location independant units (manufacturing) and having more than 500 employees were running the show with HR team consisting of 2-3, even with out ERP.
