Dear all,
Recently we hired an employee. Who claimed that he was working as team lead in his previous company(X) in the interview. But when we saw his appointment letter form his previous company, it says he was appointed in the capacity of "Recruitment consultant".
When asked an explanation he said he was promoted to team lead position and was handling a team of 5. When asked about a "Letter of Appreciation/ Promotion" to that effect he says he doesn't have it as he didn't get it.
Also he took his own time to submit his documents from his previous employer.
The employee about whom i am refering worked in his previous company for just 7 months.
After I took this to my managements notice, they suggested i do a back ground verification. How should i proceed with the verification process?
I called up to his previous office and spoke to the Hr executive over there who said that she doesn't know why he left? When asked how come she doesn't have a record, then she answered very reluctantly, "for better prospects".
How should i extract the right information from his previous employers?

In the first place may I ask.. what is your title with your current organisation and is this your responsibility to check on the employees past profile.
If you are part of teh HR team, then I will suggest the below points.
1) If you are satisified with the employee(you have referred to) performance in his current position your organisation has given him/her, just see that the copy of the offer letter/relieving order is in place and we can keep a close tab on his performance versus the metrics for his position and then decide if we can keep him/her based on the performance.
2) The decision of hiring the employee was actually based on the documents given and also verified.
3) The employee can be called in and asked for references as we have certain criterias to verify and ask for can answers based on the documents you present to him/her.
4) Do not Hire to Fire as this is the main drawback the BPO market is currently facing.
Any suggestions or queries from all the other amazing brain people out here.

If u have anhy problems in background verification, u can go in for Background Verification Companies. these organisations for a fee checks the background of an employee from schooling till date confidentially.The names of this organisations depending on the palce are availabe in the magazine HRD for this month. Hope this proves useful

If it is really a serious matter, then either you yourself visit that organisation where he was working earlier or if you can support then hire a detective for the verification.as in foreign companies all the organisations generally tie up with the detective agency in order to hire the genuine employees.or if the incumbent is highly good or productive then leave it if it is feasible to avoid.

After reading your problem and post by all the HR people, i would suggest you to send a employee verification form to his previous employer, i am sure they would coordinate, in case this employee verification is been delayed write another e mail to them stating that there reply will decide the candidature of the employee status and give them time frame if they delay - this could be one option.
another one you could try is that, you can do the reference check with other employees or colleagues of his previous employer, this could be informal, as its sources may not be creditable all the the time, ask for at least 3 to 4 numbers.
another option would be - try getting in touch with his earlier employer and get the verification from them, you can look at this option only when you feel the hired employee is worth giving this chance :)
