Dear All,
We at our company are providing food to all our employees. But unfortunately some employees are wasting food by having a lot and due to this those employees who are having lunch later on, are not getting sufficient food. Please suggest that should we send a mail to all employees regarding this? Please suggest the professional way to intimate employees about saving food.
Thanks & regards..

Dear Varsha,
Please dont directly think of a mail. firstly gather all employees together tell them the fact what is happening. I think verbal discussion will bring fast change instead of written mail & people will definately support for this cause.
Even when they dont listen verbally then only go for written.

Dear Varsha
You can explain about the wastage of food to the employee but it will fetch only some result. Intstead you can deploy one person for serving the food to the employees, so that you can have control on food wastage. Further if the employee demand for more food the serving person can politely convey that after having food they can come and collect the food for second, third or fourth time also.
Please keep some poster regarding restriction of food waste in Dining Hall.

Hi :
Displaying posters is a good idea in the canteen esp where the food is laid out.... write some nice interesting messages adding a touch of humor. This will work better than having verbal discussion or mailer.

Dear Varsha
Self motivation and desire will only bring the behavioral changes in worker. They need to be educated.
You can plan a weekly campaign " Save food save life" This could be 15 mins prior to lunch break, show them some videos( Starvation in south africa, Neutritional food for the body) prior to lunch, show some pictures of their own plates with left over food that will imbibe sense. Choose some of their own members to speak on the subject rather than senior talking. Display of picture during the campaign is a bright idea
Some more reason for the practice could be..
psycology that they will not get food later so they dump their plate.
It may be longer time for refill the contener of serving bowl
Please ensure that there is adequte food supply regularly avilable in the canteen as it could be their occasional experience
This we have seen even in wedding buffet in many places.

You can display some posters related to Food Saving. Also make a Canteen committee and have a meeting at least once a month for improvements and during that time you communicate the committee members regarding food waste matter also. Committee members will also address these food wastage message during their morning meeting at shop floor.

Hello Varsha,
Further to the suggestions from the members--like Posters in the Dining area(s), verbal discussions, etc, each of which will definitely have a positive effect towards avoiding food wastage--there COULD be another way of handling it.
Since you are located in a Tier-3 city, there would be quite a few orphanages/old-age homes close to your premises. You could tie-up with any/some of them to give-away the excess food from your canteen--many such institutions accept it, since they know this would be a continuous/daily affair & they will save money @ their end [the logistics can be worked-out].
Now for the CRITICAL part--share with all the employees that the company is planning for such a tie-up & whoever wastes food would only be ensuring that KIDS/ELDERS WOULD BE HIT BY THEIR WASTAGE.
Human psychology being what it is, people, in general, THINK TWICE when kids/elders are effected by their actions--MUCH MORE than they would care about colleagues or those @ the same/similar level [age-wise or socially].
Any kitchen usually cooks a few more plates than actually needed--that extra food could go to the institutions--even if all the employees turn good boys/girls :-)
This would, in a way, also address your official CSR objectives/obligations--given that the new CSR regulations are being brought-in by the Govt. of India in the next Budget.
