Female scientists are really incredible. They walk on a tight-rope to balance their work life and personal life. They face several issues like career break, less opportunity, lack of confidence to tackle a higher position, early departure from institute, questioning people etc.
Let's discuss deeper...
1.Effort
Scientist is a profession which requires a lot of research, dedication, and diligent efforts.
As Nandini pointed a female scientist has to put double effort than a male scientists to manage between the tight-rope of family and career.
2. Career Break
Due to maternity or some other reason, women have to take a break which affects her career many times.
Except this all, they have immense pressure from family and they keep swinging between these two.

Situation is equal for the scientist whether male or female for the 1st point which is EFFORTS and manage between family and career.

For the second point is career break , i will agree with some situation like , maternity and all but in my opinion that kind situation is also manageable situation with the help of law and guidance of seniors.

MOBILITY SCHEME

(Addressing relocation issue of Women Scientists)

In the year 2014, Department has restructured all the women specific programmes under one umbrella known as “KIRAN” (Knowledge Involvement in Research Advancement through Nurturing). KIRAN is addressing various issues related with women scientists (e.g. unemployment, relocation etc.) and aimed to provide opportunities in research (WOS-A), technology development/demonstration (WOS-B), and self-employment (WOS-C) etc. KIRAN is also actively involved in taking proactive measures, under the name CURIE (Consolidation of University Research for Innovation and Excellence in Women Universities) to develop state-of-the-art infrastructure in women universities in order to attract, train and retain promising girls students in S&T domain.

In continuation of this, another landmark programme, named as, “Mobility Scheme” has been just launched under KIRAN which will address relocation issue of women scientists working in regular position in Government Organizations. The Mobility Scheme is aimed to provide an opportunity to women scientists who are facing difficulties in their present job due to relocation (marriage, transfer of husband to any other location within the country, attending ailing parents, and accompanying children studying in different city) and will act as filler while searching other career option at new place. The initiative intends to provide a harmonious environment during early phases of women scientists where they would like to stay active in research in addition to attending and fulfilling other responsibilities in the domestic front. It offers a contractual research award to women scientists and enables them for independent research.

Although the tonality of the thread seems to be whining, the essence is that women themselves have to restore trust in their ability to hold higher positions in any institutes. Inevitably, they have to take career break but many women are breaking this stereotype and putting great effort to make their career growth as important as their family is.

The current situation has been brought out very nicely.
In my view women who are in IT and other sectors also do not have an easy path to walk through.
All the predicaments mentioned above are valid for them also.
Some one will be lucky to get a good support from their house/ in-laws to mitigate the professional demands.
Work Life balance will keep coming for discussion as long as the culture of a "9 to 5 " does not set in.
Even then, support from back home will be a very big governing factor.
