Hi
Glad to be a part of this forum....hoping for an enriching experience.
I am a second year MBA student with graduation in IT engg. m specialising in HR and wanted some help on deciding what to go for...now that the placemnets are coming.
Hr consultancy is about OD interventions and such.
and an ERP consultant in HR function would be like getting the module implenmented.
Could experienced ppl in both fields enlighten us abt what it takes to do well in these...what r the growth prospect...scope for hifting jobs...and whats the compensation like.

There are two thisng to be considered here.
1. IT back ground + HR leading to ERP.
If you are ever involved in implementation of ERP ( like SAP) in HR, you would realize the depth and scope of HR and how to configure the same to any organization. Then you can become an ERP consultant in the functional area. However the growth gets narrower as you get stuck to the application based HR practices.
2. MBA with HR
Stregthen HR skills. Forget your IT skills( they may be useful in data mining concepts later). Think differently. Think assessments & assessment center concepts. Give importance to soft skills. Look for 'Right' candidate not 'Best' candidates. Concentrate on interview techniques and logistics. Can you innovate a formula for 'attrition' ?
Think and the possibilities are far too many in HR.

You are asking a lot, since begining focus on OD in any case by initial HR initiative. but as punching said and not disappointing him an ERP should not restrict HR practices by common sense. Mining skills points worth and develop as expereince. by the what's the rank of the institute for MBA IT.

its a real crossroads rite now...as i dont know what wil i prefer....hope its sorted out :)
n umalme... abt MBA IT rank of XIMB....its quite good. Loads of top IT companies for recruitment...with good projects. so the prospects are good.
on a different track...how good is HR of PSU's..for example...IOCL.(Indian oil corp ltd). ??

I am not sure. If you are content with reasonable salary and great job guarantee, go for it!

( I worked 18 years in PSU ( Electronics Div, BHEL) and then got out to make more money in Pvt sector :-)

The PSUs are very strong in their systems and is a great learning ground. If you can resist the temptation of settling down in the 'safe' job, and can get into PVT sector with that experience, you can really grow well.

At the same time in PSUs, you may not have much to implement your ideas, as it takes time to move the machinery. I wanted BHEL to implement SAP in BHEL, Bangalore in 1998. I resigned in 1999 and BHEL, Bangalore implemented SAP in 2003 ! Can you wait?

Hence, you need to may a quick and reasonably good decision. HR in BPO and ITES is challenging and they are willing to experiment to in selection and development. They are willing to do psychometric assessments. If you have a good formula for attrition, you are the next richest person in India !

HR is remunerative in IT and IT related areas.

Keep your thinking cap on and analyse what you are best at. Probably you can discuss with a 'punchingbag' and discuss various options.

hi....u seem to have loads of experience behind you :)
as of now...i think will go for IOCL(of course if they take me ;)
coz i can always get into pvt sector later if i want to...but not vice versa.
n as u said its goin to a great learning ground in the beginning of a career....n hopefully wil luk good on CV too.
to all Hr ppl with exp here...wanted to ask something else too.....
how easy is it to shift from an HRD/OD kinda job to an ERP-HR consultant role and vice versa....??
