Hi, i m facing a lot of problem while maintaining discipline in the office. The staff doesn't have a responsible attitude towards work and they are neither punctual or regular. Kindly help me in framing the right rules to maintain the decorum in the office

What is your designation? Are you owner or from HR Department? Have you discussed the problem of indiscipline with your MD? What are his/her views?

Indiscipline is a matter of organisation's culture. Your MD has allowed to things to come to unwieldy situation. Had he/she been strict right from first day, this post would not have come up.

As a matter of solution, first talk to your MD. If he is also concerned then ask him whether he is inclined to take strict disciplinary action. Secondly, bringing reforms is a time consuming process and behavioural reforms are no exception. However, to begin with conduct training on business etiquette.

Lastly, have you given targets to your employees? You need to overhaul your Performance Management System (PMS). When measurements are not proper, organisation faces challenges like these.

You need to have an in house discussion with senior people of the organisation and come to common ground of basic rules.
Firm culture of discipline needs to be put in place,starting with senior lot setting examples.
Circular to all employees,circulation of certain dos and donts and introduction of a incentive scheme for performance can be considered.

Discipline and decorum is something that should have been ingrained within the individual, during his or her formative years as a child and later on as an adult. If that does not take place, and if such people come to work, they spread their indiscipline and behaviour amongst other people. Consequently, the whole office will be chaotic. Whosoever incharge of the organisation, they need to call all the people to assemble and explain to them the benefits of being disciplined and organised. You can give a futuristic date... not far off, may be from first of next month.... and inform them that attendance, punctuality will be monitored and maintained. As regards noisy or chaotic office, that should be handled forthwith, without a time frame. Above all, unless the top management walk the talk, that is they themselves come to the office on time,, rather before time, that will be a good example for others to emulate. When the boss walks in at 11 am, then one cannot expect discipline in the office. Everything should percolate from the top, ultimately, because as they say ' bottle-neck for the bottle is always at the top' !!!

You can even organise for a training programme on corporate or business etiquettes, punctuality, discipline etc. to guide them. Those who do not correct or change themselves, despite so much of advice and training, can be shown the door,without any emotion or softer approach !

Solution to this issue depends on the nature, size and history of the office. As rightly pointed out above, it also depends upon your position in the office, the thinking of the management and the management culture. Kindly give details on these aspects so that a practical solution can be given. Otherwise you will get only theoretical lectures.
