Dear Anjali,

The gap that has caused in your career is not exceptional. It is common amongst all the women. Career gap owing to pregnancy is not equivalent to education gap caused due to failing in the examination. Therefore, remove this sense of guilt.

Possibly the cause of your nervousness could be because of lack of knowledge. Confidence stems from the knowledge. Therefore, build the knowledge. Go through the discussions that take place on this forum. This forum is nothing but window to the outside world. People come up with whole lot of problem at their workplace. If you read those threads where seniors contribute their replies, it will be education to you. Secondly, be in touch with the HR books also. It will be helpful to you.

Dear Anjali,

Now you have come out with the crux of the problem. More than career gap, it is fear of public speaking that is making you anxious. Therefore, you need to take training on presentation skills or public speaking skills. Check whether in your city you have toastmasters club. Join this club. It will improve your public speaking skills in a big way.

To improve your communication, read the English newspapers loudly. Record your voice and send the audio file to some senior to take feedback. Keep dictionary besides you while reading. Improve your word-power.

Going further, never rely on references. You should acquire anything on your own. There are millions of others who get job on their own therefore, you should be no exception. If you do not believe on yourself then why others will believe on you? Please note that everything starts with self-belief.

Suggestion of your spouse to start attending interviews is hands-on. It will remove your fear. However, attending the interviews is not the only job. You need to crack it also.

All the best!
