Hello All,
I have recently joined a Pvt. Ltd. company in which
1) The salary is calculated in such a way that if an employee is late for 15 mins more than 3 times then there will be a deduction in the salary as per the minutes s/he is late. like if s/he came at 9:20 am 4 times a month his 80 mins salary will be deducted and if s/he comes at 10 am one time in a month (after taking permission from his boss) his 1 hr salary will be deducted. As an HR and working with a professional organization I don't feel it as a healthy practice and good for employee's motivation. By this way most of the times employees get different Salary figures every month.
2) We get Gratuity deducted from the salary but in the salary slip or in the break up of the CTC it is not mentioned.
Please suggest is the going on practice right or need to be changed. To add on we have a manufacturing unit as well but the venue and staff for head office and plant are separate.
Thanks!

Rajita,
Whatever you have stated above you can say it is the policy of your organization with an idea to inculcate the sense of discipline among the employees. The policy of an organization may vary from organization to organization. In some organization I have seen the policy like employees are allowed for grace period of 10 minutes maximum on three occasions in a month but single late for more than say 20 minutes half day absent of the employee will be marked.
But yes if your organization is deducted any gratuity amount from the employees monthly salary it is totally wrong and unethical practice, which as a HR guy you should suggest and convince your superior to disband this practice.

1. It is absolutely correct to deduct salary for latecoming. It is not correct to say that it will demotivate people. In fact, in my experience, most of the employees come on time. You can even obsere that the people who are comi ng late mostly are the same people. If you do not dedcut salary from these people, then who are regulary coming on time will get demotivated. This pectice is very common and in no way lowers morale in the long run.
2, CTC is a calculation of cost of an employee . It os not part of wage slip and no one will show this. Again there is no deduction of gratuity from salary. When we talk about CTC, we add benefits like gratuty, bonus, etc. But we also give a letter stating the salary break up for monthly. annual benefits and statutory benefits. Please understand the difference between CTC and salary There are a number of posts in the citehr itself and these posts will help you to understand the difference
