Hi
I would like to know the following about OD:
1. What educational qualifications and work experiences should one have to get into OD? Does having a background in behavioral training help in making a career in OD?
2. What are trends and the areas of focus (in India)?
3. Is there any OD theory that has been created/ used specific for Asian countries?
4. Which organizations in India use assessment centers and have a fairly strong organizational development function (as a separate department or as a part of some other department)?
5. Which institutes in India teach OD (not just as a part of Industrial/ Organizational/ Applied Psychology)? I know only about the Centre of Organizational Development (Hyderabad).
Thanks

Dear Somapal,
1. Educational Qualifications- People from Quality background are doing OD
stuff in organisations to improve process areas. So, educational
Qualification is not mandatory.
2. The trends show clearly that there is a lot of demand gonna be created
for OD professionals in the coming years.
3. Not only asia, but within the organizations there are different OD
interventions used which are unique in nature...not sure about the
theoritical aspect of it.
4. There are plethora of organizations which have AC...just to name a
few I came across, - NTPC, Aricent, Dell.
5. Master of Human Resource and Organizational Development (MHROD),
Faculty of Commerce and Business, Delhi School of Economics, DU
which offers specialization in OD.

Hi Soma,
1. A formal background in management would definitely help a lot in gettin into OD - though its practically not mandatory, most organizations perceive it that way. Considerable expertise in behavioural training would definitely make it easier to comprehend the needs and be able to articulate the interventions better.
2. The current trend, which is seen over the last 3 years is slowly getting skewed towards making Behavioural Assessments as part of the OD interventions, particularly with a consulting approach and focus on Counseling, Coaching and Mentoring. Tools like DISC, MBTI, 16PF, etc are getting more and more acceptance and are being widely used currently in many IT / BPO/ manufacturing, retail and airlines industry.
3. There are many OD theories that are in existence, though you cant say that a particular one is the most valid or widely used - the field itself is yet to grow to the level of maturity seen elsewhere in other countries.
4. Many companies in India in the IT / BPO / Manufacturing and Retail have implemented Assessment centers; even some of the companies in the healthcare industry have jumped into the cart - I have refrained from naming the companies, for obvious reasons.
5. There are a lot of MDPs offered by IIMs and other premium business schools in the country, related to OD as a separate identity -otherwise, most univeristy programs would have OD as just a part of the full program - maybe as a single paper to be studied for the award of the degree.
My personal opinion is that rather than a program or a course that might teach OD, it is the practical exposure and experience gained through the various training and development initiatives that one gets exposed, which goes a long way in making one a genuine OD consultant.
