Dear All, In the year 2020, the mandatory holidays such as Republic Day, Independence Day or Gandhi Jayanthi falls on Sunday, should the holiday be compensated or company can provide another optional Holiday. Please let me know if the above scenario occurs, what would be the alternate option or let me know company can provide Holiday for selected Festivals.
Thanks in advance.

Need not compensate - if talking in strict terms. However, management of company can take a lenient view.

The Holidays Act is a state enactment. Therefore, each state shall have different Act to regulate holidays. In most of the Acts, the National Holidays are prescribed separately, as......26th January, 1st May, 15th August and 2nd of October (in Karnataka 1st November being State formation day is also a mandatory holiday) should be observed as holidays.....and in addition to that there shall be given 4/ 5 / 9 (different states have different number of holidays, say Tamil Nadu has 4 festival holidays, whereas Kerala has 9 festival holidays, probably the highest) holidays in consultation with the employees and considering the religious and regional sentiments.... Since the mandatory holidays are fixed and specified as such in the Act (state Industrial Establishments (National and Festival Holidays) Act), you need not give any compensatory holiday in case any of the national holidays falls on your weekly off day.
