Dear Minakshi,
If the damage to the company property was discovered then you need to conduct the fact-finding enquiry. Have you done that? While conducting the enquiry, following factors need to be considered:
a) Who was involved in the damage? Was it only one person or more than one person?
b) Was there transgression of laid down procedure or SOP?
c) The person who has caused the damage, was he capable to handle the job or task? Did he know that under what circumstances, the company property gets damaged?
d) Were there similar instances in the past?
While recovery of the damaged property, take into account the depreciation of the property. Secondly, while levying the penalty, make sure that you divide the penalty amounts in those many instalments so that the employee(s) get(s) at least 50% of his take home salary.
Thanks,
