Hi all,

First of all, no offense meant to any HR friends here. I am posting this out of curiosity as why do HRs behave in such (unprofessional) way?

Some of the highly reputed companies called me for a position open with them.

Case - 1:

One of the largest companies in the global PR industry - HR called me on October 4, 2012 and said we received your resume. The HR was quite energetic in his voice and sounded so friendly too. You will have telephonic interview at 11:00 AM tomorrow [October 4, 2012] with the Project Manager.

On October 5, 2012, HR called up at 10:55 AM to know if I am ready. I said I am all set and ready. Again in this call too, the HR was quite energetic in his voice and sounded so friendly too. It's 11:00 AM, and the so-called Project Manager did not call. I did not receive any call even hours later. I called the HR up at 1:15 PM and said hi this is kamal. The HR said mmm yeah kamal tell me. I told the HR I did not receive any call. The HR said "oh, I will check with the Manager and let you know"....

That'S It...no call from the HR again....until this minute....

Case - 2: One of the top global companies in the IT industry [consulting and service domain]...The HR called me on October 4, 2012. Are you still interested in the position [it is of my domain]. Long back they called me and conducted a test. I was through and have been waiting for second round...No one called up...They again called on October 4, 2012 and asked if I am still interested...I said yes...The HR said you will get a call on October 5, 2012 some time in the day...I did not receive a single call..I called back the HR to know what happened...She said she will call me back...

I DON'T UNDERSTAND,...WHY do HRs do it? When they found someone else, they could as well let me know the same on the phone...I won't chide them or sue them right? It's been the same with thousands of candidates or prospective employees like me...WHY...They could at least send a mail stating the position has been filled...It's highly unprofessional and rude of them to keep the candidate in dark...or leave him in the middle of no where...

Should I assume I am not selected?

Please clarify my concern...so next time it happens to me at least i can be enlightened enough to handle the situation....

Awaiting your advices..

Thanks and Regards,

Dear Kamal Raj,

Usually, its not the rudeness or unprofessional of behaving this way... The fact is HRs consider the humanitarian grounds of not hurting you.. or humiliate you... when HR directly says that someone else is selected for that position... it will demotivate you.. When they say someone else has been selected.. your quest for thirst is not stopped at that.. you want to know more.. you want to know as to why you were not selected.. you want to know why the other person is being selected.. you want to know what other skills were required for that particular job etc etc...,wherein HR is not in a position to explain you all these...

Instead, if HR says we will get back to you... you will wait for another 2 or 3 days and you stop hoping for the call and you will have no other question marks in your head..... You will start ignoring it...

So next time if something like this happens to you... just start ignoring and start searching for another opportunity...!! Hope this makes your doubts clear..!

Hi Bhargavi,

Thank you very much for your response/advice. You are right. Rejection of course has bad repercussions but being in dark, especially when a candidate is so hopeful of the position with a super big company, is weird. Of course,,,again,,,as time passes by with no communication...it is implied that someone else has taken my pie...

Guess what, I was selected for the final round in lead position with so-called big name in the financial services domain...The HR again said I have come down for negotiation...that's it next day on..no calls...i already cleared 3 rounds...

when I called the HR...do you know the reason I was told....I don't suit the profile completely because for the last six months I have been in some other domain although in the same profile...

I have been in the same profile for the past 9 years...it's just that I changed the domain but not industry or career as a whole...

Doesn't the HR know that while they were interviewing and testing me for the last three rounds?

Anyways,,,I will definitely buy your point...I will call it quits and go for something else...

Thanks again,,,Cheers

Kamal,

Good observations. HR is not a very professionally managed function in most companies.

Citing reasons like 'not hurting you' is pretty unprofessional in my view! The european practice is that they send you an intimation stating that you have not been selected. Maintaining a good rapport with the potential employee is important and is a very strong marketing tool. When a company professionally performs its recruitment, it automatically improves its brand equity. And the candidate or the joining employee feels charged to work for such an organization.

Unfortunately, most HR folks like to take the laid-back alternative by giving excuses of 'not hurting people'! The corporate culture in India lacks that discrete, objective and professional touch at times and this is very organization specific.

More importantly, the HR is taken for a ride by their internal customers at times. So, they have too much of 'chaos' on the schedules. So, its hard to give the candidate the right information... The only option they have is to wait till they have reasonably good info so as to communicate with the employee.

But yes, Bharghavi has a point... keep the search on :-)

Yeah Nikhil,
You are absolutely right...I have only seen very few companies do it. Westerners are criticized for their hippy or hyper-advanced blah blah culture but the way they are organized in the professional world is amazing....I have worked in Ireland for sometime and really loved working there....The only best environment I have seen in my entire life...
thank you for your reply and sharing experience,
Cheers,
Kamal Raj
