Hi!

Laws are much significant in HR, mostly in the manufacturing sector than in the service sector. However, different Acts such as the NI Act, Factories Act, Contract Act, Workmen Compensation Act, Minimum Wages Act, Employee Benefits Act, and MRTP Act are a few which will play a vital role in the day-to-day functions of HR. Good knowledge of laws will definitely make an HR professional a smart professional.

Dear Mr. Kumar R.,

I fully agree with you; my answer was the same as per yours. However, the person who was interviewing me was not satisfied with the answer. He said, "Yes, the ID Act is okay, but all the others are Labour Laws, not laws related to Industrial Relations (IR)." Upon hearing this, the interviewer mentioned that I lacked good knowledge of laws and, therefore, I was not selected. I was shocked at that moment, wondering why he was making such a statement.

I am now attempting to clarify how we can distinguish between Labour Laws and laws related to IR.

Hi, friend!

You should also be familiar with all local enactments and labor laws. The rules and regulations of the labor department. How does the labor department function? You can find good books on industrial laws and labor laws in the market, and if possible, HR laws. When you face an interview, brush up on all these acts, including those mentioned in the messages by the members.

Best of luck,
Kumar R

We discussed this topic extensively, and I believe we have now reached a consensus. However, to conclude, can any one of us clarify how the labor laws can be further divided into parts, particularly those related to Industrial Relations (IR) and so on.

Hi Abhishek,

Yes, to some extent, we cannot mix all of these into industrial acts. We have to categorize these into HR and IR. Normally, HR personnel will be proficient in all matters related to various acts like the Compensation Act, Minimum Wages Act, Employees' Benefit Act, etc. However, I would like to clarify that IR does not include all of these acts. These acts can be placed under the personnel head.
