Dear Friends, Salary of "Sweeper" at NTPC, file is attached. Kindly let me know if this article is true, and how many years does it take to get this much salary at NTPC itself. Thanks, Vinod

Dear friends,
I don't doubt the authenticity of the report, and I have myself met such persons in respectable companies earning close to 5 lakh, and they are just Xth pass. It's what someone truly says as lucky, but yes, they do work hard too.

Dr. Swati

It is true. The salary of staff in Navratna PSUs increases open-ended at 3.5% per annum. Due to time-to-time pay revisions also taking effect. You may find some employees at S2 - S3 level drawing a basic salary more than 22000 PM with time (near about 40 years of service). Now, along with the recent 50% DA merger and ad-hoc payments in light of the 6th pay commission recommendation, it is not hard to find staff with such high payments (where near about 80 to 115% of perks and allowances also may be counted). In government sectors, it is not difficult to notice by young executives that their subordinates are earning twice as much as themselves. In some points, it is good according to social justice and need-based distribution theories. They are grown-up individuals with family needs, while the young executives are often unmarried or with small families. Their expenditure needs are really small compared to those people.

I am working in NTPC. The content is not clear. Is it salary only or annual cost to company of the referred employees. The salary of sweepers and drivers is surely the best paid. I think it is a faulty job evaluation of the company. Do you know that the graduate stenos, assistants, and quite a lot of technical posts are equated with drivers in NTPC?

I have been working in NTPC-HR for the last 16 years and have yet to find such an anomaly. In fact, NTPC does not have any trades called sweeper, peon, etc. In the unit where I am currently working, we do not have any attendants for carrying files or drivers for vehicles. Everybody carries their own files. There is just one driver for the head of the business unit.
In this instance, it is more likely that the persons in question might have superannuated in that year. All the superannuation benefits/terminal benefits were paid/released to him. Thus, the amounts released have exceeded a certain threshold limit, and thus the case needed to be reported in the annual accounts.
NTPC is a socially responsible organization. It is delivering value for its clients and stakeholders at very competitive rates. Professionals of this forum need to exercise wisdom in accepting such stories.

Government of India and Department of Public Enterprise are squandering public money. You cannot expect better governance in a Banana Republic compared to third world countries. India has the freedom of choice to do anything, anywhere, anytime - who cares? The government is not accountable to the people for the taxes they collect. Where does this money go?
Here is Dragon called Navratna efficiency below 20% salary above the market by 700%. Public Sector Efficiency: Weekly Off days: 104 (Saturday and Sunday) Holidays in a year: 17 to 21 days Paid Leave: 30 days Casual Leave: 12 days Sick Leave: 20 Days Extraordinary Leave without pay - Unlimited Special Leave Provision for Sterilization Leaves on Medical Ground
Minimum annual leave with weekly offs = 183 days minimum Working days in a Year: 365 days Balance actual working days: 182 days per year
The above figures are based on the actual average leaves per annum availed by government servants in a year. This is the minimum leave criteria applicable for the lowest "C" schedule Public Sector companies in the central government. You can add many more leaves for education, traveling on transfer (10 days), plus many other kinds of leave.
The above working days are half of the total working days in a year. If you add more inefficiency and corruption in the government, the total impact goes to 15% output on 365 days of working for total investment by the government because they have a surplus workforce. Overtime is a standing order; if you work during normal working hours, you are eligible for overtime; if not, the entire operations are managed through contract employees. All such sham contracts are owned by the relatives of Union Office Bearers.
This is a well-known fact in all government companies. Who cares for 8 lakhs; even if it's 80 lakhs, it doesn't surprise the government.

Can anyone compare a government organization and a private company? Sorry to say that IT companies work less than government organizations when it comes to leave and holidays. Don't be annoyed by leave and holidays. Corruption does not solely stem from leave and holidays. Change the system, and everything will change. Have a positive attitude. Corruption is an individual behavior; correction can only be made.

Dear All,
Please do not treat the public sector as a whipping boy. Remember, our constitution provides for a Welfare State. It is the government, the owners of PSU, and Parliament to decide on this, not us. Every industry, be it private or PSU, has its drawbacks. Are not people in the private sector working for someone in management to have a "High Funda life"? Ultimately, PSUs themselves generate a community life which the private sector is not doing. Take the example of BHEL Trichy, NLC, and NTPC.

It was an absolute falsification of the facts about the claimed salary. It must have included all the perks, which include LTC, Medical, etc., making it a bit bombastic. The conviction behind my statement is the fact that I am an ex-NTPC HR professional.
