A skill matrix, as the name suggests, is a matrix of the skill set required to perform a task. Why use a skill matrix? It is because it is a more practical tool to identify skill/competency gaps, to pinpoint training needs, can be utilized in job enrichment, and can be beneficial during performance appraisals if used correctly.
To explain simply, let's consider a belt manufacturing company. If I were to create a skill matrix for operators, the first step would involve analyzing the belt manufacturing process. I would then determine the specific skills needed for manufacturing quality belts, such as attaching, pasting, buckling, etc. We would then assess the skill set of each operator against these predetermined benchmarks. If an operator's skills fall below the benchmark, it indicates a need for additional training.
Subsequently, training can be arranged to enhance the skill set (job enrichment). This process can be repeated twice a year. By doing so, after training and practical exposure, we can reassess skill gaps and evaluate employee learning abilities, which can be considered during appraisals.
