Hi all,

My company is intending to design its own magazine. This magazine will contain all subjects related to the company's achievements, roles, activities, planning, and more. It will be published once a month.

Please advise me on what the main things are that we need to consider when designing the final layout of the magazine.

Thank you.

Hi,

It's a very good idea that your company is planning to release a magazine. A monthly magazine will help employees in the company to know what's happening within the organization. Certain topics that can be included are:

1. A monthly advice column by the CEO for employees.
2. Articles contributed by employees.
3. Games, puzzles, or quizzes.
4. Events and celebrations that occurred in the previous month and upcoming events.
5. Quarterly results publication.
6. If a senior person joins the company in a month, a welcome note should be included in the newsletter.

I hope this gives you a clear idea of what can be added. Please feel free to contact me for any queries.

Hi,

In addition to the above-mentioned, you can also add:
- A gratitude note if any senior person retires, takes voluntary retirement, or leaves the company for any other reason in that month.
- Publish articles with photographs if any employee is participating in district/state/national level sports, games, competitions. This will also inspire new employees to participate.
- Articles if your company/employees are organizing any charity shows, camps for the elderly, orphans, blood donation programs, or social welfare activities.

A company's internal magazine should significantly add to the Knowledge Management of that organization. Company News magazines circulation is not confined to employees of the company; it’s read by competitors, partners, visitors, etc. Therefore the designers should see to it that it is the company’s professional statement, in terms of look and content. Internally, it should captivate the interests for all strata of employees. I have seen company journals that are monotonous compilations of companies projects and events. While it should give a first - hand information of all major initiatives of the company, these should not be too much "official". Limit the CEO’s address to the firswt issue. Instead, a kind of “From the Editor’ Desk” would be a welcome idea. That “short & sweet” note could discuss an issue/event, that is current or could give a curtain raiser for an interesting article appearing in the issue.

Employees and their family members' achievements like good academic performance or creative accomplishments preferably with accompanying photographs should find a place.

A good balance of visual and textual presentations should be maintained. Due consideration should be given to page lay outs. I have come across a magazine in which all the pictures are of same size.

Contents should add seasonal topics. For example, exam season’s issue could carry articles on managing tension and tips to score better; vacation season issue could publish travel tips, leisure destination, etc.

Factual errors, inaccuracies in figures, dates, names, etc. as well as grammatical and spelling errors should be totally avoided. Too much projection of the senior management should also be avoided.

Regular columns by Techies on company’s standard desktop products - word processor, spreadsheet, e-mil,etc. - Internet tips like say “URL of the Month”, Info. Security awareness, would be a great attraction and help for the ordinary employees.

Since you are at the stage of launching the mag, you can think of regular columns to highlight one business unit in every issue like “Our Recruitment Department” , “Our Procurement Section”, etc. This gives the company employees a fairly good idea how other divisions/departments/sections are functioning and who are the key players.

Company Magazine is a good vehicle for communicating company policy statements/ changes, management intents, etc. However, remember it’s not a management weapon but an employee’s tool.

Good Luck!

Hi,

A company magazine is essential for keeping your company's image in front of the customer. It should include:

1. CEO communication.
2. Write your Mission, Vision, and the Strategy of the company (history and leadership, uniting shared values).
3. Awards and Recognition.
4. Information about the communities.
5. Global initiatives taken by the company.
6. Research conducted by the company.
7. Events organized by the company.
8. Alumni updates.
9. Press releases.
10. Focus on...

I believe it'll help you.

Hi,

It's a very good idea that your company is planning to release a magazine. You already have many things to mention in your magazine. You can also add the new technology that you have implemented in your organization, as well as information about your company's growth rate in the market with data and figures.

Dear Waleed,

You can also add the profile of one of the oldest employees of the organization, along with a picture of the family. About the hobbies of a colleague, like photography, along with a photograph taken by the colleague. A list of the new joiners to the organization mentioning their names, departments, and locations.

Best of luck with the magazine. :D

Hi,

It is a good idea to have an in-house journal to keep the employees informed about the happenings in the company across functions and regions. You can segment it in terms of learnings, pride, fun, and earning – four main things affecting the employees of any organization across the world.

You can spruce it up further to add value by including star forecasts, recipes by employees, achievements by employees' kin in academics and sports, notable social activities of your employees for the welfare of society, and so on.

Thank you.

Dear Seniors,

I am working with a company in the U.A.E, and I am really impressed by all your ideas. Recently, my company announced its own magazine.

Please read the email below, which I received a few days ago from my HR manager. I would appreciate it if somebody could read this email today and reply to me quickly to help me out.

Good morning all,

In order to strengthen communication among the NSCC team, we are initiating an internal corporate magazine. Our aim is to publish the first volume of the magazine at the end of this month, based on quarterly cycles. The idea is to create the magazine in such a way that every team member would find something for themselves in it, whether it be the sites you work on, the people you work with, or even personal stories such as new babies born, colleagues getting married, or even cartoons.

We believe it should start with naming the magazine. We need your help in coming up with a name for the magazine title. The person whose title is chosen will win Dhs. 500 and, of course, receive recognition for being a creative genius!

Mr. Khalil Khoury and the editing team will be the jury to decide the name and, of course, the winner.

Please note that both Arabic and English titles will be accepted. You can send your suggestions to Elly or me before the 12th of March 2009, and we will announce the winner in the 1st edition of the magazine.

I would appreciate it if you could encourage the involvement of other employees who do not have email addresses. They can call or fax their suggestions to me or Elly.

Good luck, and may the best man (or woman!) win.

Waiting for your suggestions.....................
