Hi all,

Could you please guide me as to which sector I should go for? I am an MBA-HR in my 2nd year with 5 months of experience as an HR coordinator. I am interested in understanding which sector will provide me with career growth and how I should enter one of these sectors. Please guide me, professionals.

Thanks and regards,
Shruti Bhandari

Hi Shruti,

If you want to make a career as a Generalist HR, then definitely you should move to Retail. In the present scenario, this is the fastest-growing sector. Till now, this sector has only acquired approximately 5%, which is a large distance that has to be covered. So, there is a good future there.

Moreover, apart from big Indian houses, many MNCs are planning to move their business to India. So, we can say there is a wide scope in this field.

Wish you all the best.

Thank you so much, Amit.

But then, at the start, what should I enter as? I don't have experience in recruitment or other proper HR work. My role earlier was just coordinating, so I get along with consultants and handle the general coordination that the regional office does.

Do you by any chance have any contacts to help me enter the retail industry boom?

Thanks again,

Shruti Bhandari

Hi Shruti,

I can understand that being a fresher, you must be a little bit scared, but it's not a big deal to get entry there. The only thing you have to do is to apply the studies you did while pursuing MBA. After all, they will definitely provide training, and after that, I don't think you would have any difficulty adapting to the system. Nobody is perfect; only continuous practice makes him/her perfect.

I worked with Pantaloons in Lucknow. At that time, my Zonal Head HR was from Mumbai, but now he has changed and moved to some other company. You can place your CV with Pantaloons or any other retail company and with all leading consultancies along with your work experience. Let's see if you get a call for an interview; give it your best shot. Be sure about yourself that you can be an HR with a generalist profile too.

If you need any help, feel free to revert.

Wish you all the best.

Amit Seth

Hi Shruti,

Based on my experience, I suggest that you consider joining the retail industry. I am currently working at Reliance Retail (Ahmedabad) in the Food Supply Chain (Staple) department as an Assistant Manager, which is why I am recommending this field to you.

The best sector today to work for is IT/ITES/BANKING, FINANCE & ANY MNC INTO MUTUAL FUNDS, etc. They have the best HR practices to work for. You will get good exposure and a healthy and cool working environment to work in. So please consider joining IT/ITES or banking or any finance company. I won't suggest retail at this juncture as it is highly unorganized. After 5 years, one should certainly consider it. By the way, how do I download files uploaded by others? Can anyone tell me? Or email me at gaggan_sahni@hotmail.com.
