How many employees are required to start a canteen, and what are all the things to follow with the government for registration, etc.? In the canteen, do we need to provide any cold water? If yes, then how many employees are required to give cold water facility?

Dear Perumal,

As per the Factories Act 1948, a canteen should be provided if more than 250 workers are ordinarily employed. To start a canteen, you need to obtain a license/permission from the food inspector, a registration certificate from the Municipality/S&E Act, and notify the office of the Factory Inspector.

If in a factory more than 250 workers are ordinarily employed, then one water center should be provided for every 150 workers or part thereof up to the first 450, and one for every 450 workers or part thereof thereafter.

we have 350 employees in our company. Out of 350 employees 150 employees are in sales department. The sales people is working outside the factory. Can we avoid canteen as per factories act. Nath
