Dear Ruchi,

Good question! :-)

I think you are a fresher. Anyways, for being an HR generalist, there is no specific subject or parameter that if you have knowledge of, then you would become an HR generalist. There are a lot of activities in HR function apart from the statutory part. It does mean that you should know the managerial part as well as the statutory part. From the selection of an employee to his/her separation, there are numerous activities in the HR function.

I do not know your background; still, I would suggest you pick one topic from HR function and spend 1 week mastering it. If you would like any assistance, feel free to send an email to subru1984@yahoo.co.in.

Ruchi The first thing is to learn to spell! As a 'generalist' you will be the interface between the business and people, so you need to be able to communicate precisely in the language of both.

Hi Ruchi,

If you want to excel in the domain of Human Resources, it is very important that you have knowledge about contemporary topics such as recruitment, selection, performance management, and talent management. These are key issues that need to be highlighted in today's organizational context. HR is an ocean where you can experiment and bring out new topics for personal and organizational growth.

Hi Ruchi,

PF, ESIC, PT, and TDS are small parts of statutory compliance. As an HR Generalist, you must continuously learn. You should be proficient in Personnel Management, HRM, as well as in General Administration. Start by learning all legal aspects first and then move on to core HR.
