Which books would be helpful to me? Please provide full details on how to gain a comprehensive understanding of core HR.

There is nothing like core HR.
Please be informed that HR has different functions, and it's not possible to learn everything at once. This is why all the good positions in HR require at least 2 years of experience.
Also, be informed that HR is a daily learning process; you will come across unique issues every day.
