Hello All,

I am working in a Government University (MP State) with around 80 regular staff and 15 daily wage basis employees. We pay their salaries regularly. My question is whether we are liable to deduct ESI & PF from their salary, and should we contribute our share to PF & ESI as well? Since we are a university, does the Shop and Establishment Act apply to us or not? Please guide me. Thanks in advance.

A university set up and aided by the government will not come under the purview of any labor enactment. Moreover, the university is paying salary to the casual workers employed. A university, like any other government department, is not an industry to have PF and ESI registration. Therefore, your casual workers cannot participate in the EPF and ESI schemes.
