Dear HR Professionals,

If the performance appraisal period is from April to March, I would like to know if an employee who joins in January would be eligible for an appraisal in April. Since the employee would have only been with the organization for 3 months at that time. Additionally, if someone joins in November or December, would that employee also be eligible for an appraisal in April?

Please advise. Your help is greatly appreciated.

Thank you for your inquiry, and it is great to address your concerns. The process is quite straightforward. It varies depending on the company, but based on my experience, a minimum tenure of 6 months is typically required to be eligible for the appraisal cycle.

Every organization has to decide on a minimum period of service before an employee is put through assessment. The duration depends on the nature of the assigned work. For individuals working independently, such as Sales personnel, Programmers, designers, etc., the probation period could be as short as three to six months with appropriately adjusted targets. However, in the case of group projects, it is challenging to evaluate performance in less than six months.

Alternatively, you may conduct assessments after the probation period, which could be one year, and then set achievable targets by the end of March for the following year's assessment.

For individuals working independently, such as Sales personnel, Programmers, designers, etc., the probation period could be as short as three to six months, with appropriately reduced targets. However, in areas where teamwork is essential, assessing performance in less than six months can be challenging.

Alternatively, you may choose to assess employees after the probation period, which could be one year. Following this, you can set small targets until the end of March and assess performance accordingly.
