Dear Mukta,

"Workplace health" and "safety" are two independent issues. Why would you like to club them together while designing a policy?

Workplace health depends on the following factors:

a) Ventilation, hygiene, and sanitation at the workplace. How is the air in the office tested? How frequently is water testing done?
b) Whether the office furniture is designed ergonomically.
c) In the staff canteen, whether or not the "food safety management systems" are followed as per ISO 22000.
d) Safety precautions because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
e) As part of employee welfare, is an "on-duty" doctor available in the office? What medical facilities are provided while on duty?

Mental health depends on the following factors:

f) Daily work hours of employees and how excess working hours are tracked. Is a 5-day workweek practical? Are the weekly hours more than those of a 6-day workweek?
g) The interpersonal environment in the company.
h) Whether managers are able to motivate their subordinates.
i) Leadership stability.
j) As part of employee welfare, does the company provide counseling services to employees? If so, are these services free or paid?
k) In the event of the loss of loved ones due to COVID-19, does the company show sensitivity or continue business as usual?

Workplace safety depends on the following factors:

l) Whether a fire audit of the building is conducted annually.
m) Whether an electrical safety audit is conducted each year.
n) Whether transportation is provided to women leaving the office after 2000 hours (or as per local regulations).

I hope the above points will provide you with guidelines to design the policies.

Thanks,

Dinesh Divekar
