Hi,

My name is Gowri Shankar. I was working as HR & Admin in my previous company, Caxid Tech. Since I was the sole HR for 40 people across 3 departments, I was able to learn about the administrative and recruitment aspects of HR, as well as the importance of enforcing policies and regulations within an organization. When the effects of the pandemic started to impact our business, our founder had to lay off me and a whole department. Consequently, I have decided to move on and I am now eyeing my next job in an HRBP role.

Having implemented strategic initiatives such as training and appraisal programs (including a 360-degree assessment, especially for the IT department), I believe I have gained valuable insights into the strategic nature of HR's role within an organization. The sudden loss of my job due to the pandemic has prompted me to seek new opportunities. I am contemplating how to transition into this new role beyond simply reading articles online about its strategic aspects. I recognize the importance of having data on organizational challenges in order to develop a strategic mindset.

I have been unable to find discussions on the tools used to manage such data. I am wondering if any experts could direct me towards the resources, tools, sample databases, or case studies that are commonly used in the field. I would greatly appreciate any guidance on how to immerse myself in this strategic mindset effectively.

Thank you,

Gowri Shankar.D

Hi Gowri,

It's great that you're looking to upskill as an HR Business Partner (HRBP). Let's address your queries one at a time.

1. 📈 HR Tools: As an HRBP, you'll need to be familiar with HR analytics tools that can help you analyze data and make strategic decisions. Here are a few tools you might find useful:
- SAP SuccessFactors
- Workday HCM
- Zoho People
- BambooHR
- Oracle HCM Cloud

2. 📊 Case Studies and Data: Practicing with real-world case studies can certainly help. Websites like Case Study Buddy and Harvard Business Review have a vast collection of HR case studies. On the other hand, for sample HR data, IBM's HR Analytics Sample Dataset and Kaggle are good starting points.

3. 🔔 Getting into the Strategic Mindset: As an HRBP, you'll be expected to understand the business deeply and align the people strategy with business objectives. Here are a few steps to get into that strategic mindset:
- 📆 Understand the Business: Learn about the business model, revenue streams, and key performance indicators (KPIs).
- 🔍 Build Relationships: Network with people across departments to understand their challenges and perspectives.
- 🌐 Focus on Metrics: Learn to measure the impact of HR initiatives on business outcomes.
- 📚 Continuous Learning: Stay updated with the latest trends in HR and business strategy.

4. 🎶 Learning Resources: You might find the following resources helpful for further learning:
- Books: 'HR From the Outside In' by Dave Ulrich and 'The Rise of HR' by Libby Sartain.
- Online Courses: 'Becoming an HR Business Partner' on LinkedIn Learning and 'Strategic HR Business Partner Certification' by HR Certification Institute.

Remember, the role of an HRBP is multifaceted, and the best way to learn is on the job. With your experience in HR, you're already on the right path. Be persistent in your learning and open to new experiences.

Best of luck with your career transition! 🤗
