"Leave Without Pay" connotes and means "Leave of Absence from Duty" duly applied for by an Employee who has No Leave due to be availed with Wages/Salary. Then the said Leave of Absence is duly considered and sanctioned by the Employer/Management, considering Special Circumstances where Leave without Pay is granted.

Loss of Pay connotes and includes Non-payment for certain Stated Reasons resulting from, even, due to Disciplinary Action for Acts of Misconduct and other specified reasons.

Dear colleague,

In both cases, the common effect is a pro-rata pay cut. Prior permission is sought in the case of leave without pay, but loss of pay is due to unauthorized absence.

There is a difference as far as service rules governing public servants are concerned. If "leave without pay" has been duly sanctioned, it entails that the period is considered as service and there will be no adverse consequences. "Loss of pay" signifies unauthorized absence entailing a break in service with all its adverse consequences unless the period is regularized.

Leave Without Pay - May be authorized or unauthorized. An employee was absent from duty without any information or without any leave balance. Management may or may not sanction the leave. Therefore, it may be authorized or unauthorized.

Loss of Pay - It may happen not only for leave but also for several reasons, e.g., late coming, early leaving, joining an illegal strike, leaving the working place without informing the superior for a long time, etc.

Dear Santosh,

They both are one and the same thing. LOP stands for Loss of Pay, and LWP stands for Leave Without Pay. It technically means you will not be paid for the leaves you have taken. Ideally, if you take a casual or sick leave, you get paid for that day. However, in LOP/LWP, your salary gets deducted on a per day basis, and eventually, it will reflect on your payslip.

“Loss of Pay” means that the employee concerned is not getting paid for being absent with or without permission. This simply denotes the monetary consequence of remaining absent. “Leave Without Pay” on the other hand signifies that the employee is on authorised leave, albeit without salary/wages. In the case of the former one is not sure if the absence from work of the employee is duly sanctioned whereas in the case of the latter the employee is absent from work with permission.
