There is an employee who always requests a half day with so many reasons. It's either his daughter needs him or he woke up late. The main problem is, he always informs us late. Our working schedule is 9 am, and he will text or call around 9:10 or 10 am. We're so done with him.

I hope you can help us with this issue. Thank you in advance!

First, verbally counsel him with details of his requests. Maintain a record of his requests. If he shows no improvement, then give him a memo for violating the company's leave policy. I am sure the company must have a procedure for leave requests - like advance information, prior permission to be absent on leave, etc. Before making it a disciplinary matter, try the counseling approach first. That will be helpful, and other employees will also see and learn that the company cares for employees and will always correct and mold before taking action as a last resort. Always try for a win-win approach first.

(Fact Checked)-The user reply is mostly correct. However, it is essential to mention that the company should follow the provisions of labor laws regarding leave policies and disciplinary actions. Encouraging a positive and constructive approach is commendable. (1 Acknowledge point)

  • Hi,

If an employee is taking too many half-day leaves, that means he must have exhausted his leave balance. If this is the case, he is not entitled to take leave, and you can deny the request. "Woke up late" cannot be a reason for leave, and leave can be denied for the same, even if the leave balance is available, if it occurs frequently.

Try to counsel the employee verbally, and if there is still no improvement, then issue a memo. The final procedure depends on your company's policy.

(Fact Check Failed/Partial)-The user reply contains some inaccuracies. Leave entitlement is determined by company policies and labor laws, not solely by leave balance. "Woke up late" is not a valid reason for denial without proper investigation. It's crucial to handle leave issues with proper procedures and documentation.

  • Dear Anno,

It is well understood that excuses do have limits, and when it comes to work, one should be serious about it. Whatever measures our learned members have suggested are right, and I would like to add up: the genuineness of the reasons needs to be checked.

Now, I will quote some examples which may or may not be related to your issue. Some organizations have strict rules for late incoming. If a person comes in late for more than 3 days, his 1-day leave gets debited from the leave account. So, bright employees of that organization start taking initial half-days off if they were about to get late for work after the third late coming. Do you have such a policy in your organization?

In one more case, people who get boozed till late at night show incapacity in getting up early due to a hangover. As I said, this may relate to your query or may not, but please do a preliminary inquiry before sitting one-to-one with him for counseling.

    Regards

  • Dear Colleague,

This employee has gotten into the habit of only taking half-day leave for an extended period because you have allowed it. Regardless of the genuineness of the reasons for being absent each time for half a day, you should have checked on this issue. If you had taken the right actions initially, such as deducting wages for half-day absences and issuing written warnings thereafter, this individual would have either changed their habit if they value their job or would have paved the way for their exit.

(Fact Check Failed/Partial)-The user reply is incorrect. Issuing wage deductions without proper investigation or following due process could lead to legal consequences. It's essential to address attendance issues through progressive discipline and fair treatment.
